Tuesdays with TMAC – First Win of 2014!

(Bill W) April 8, 2014 – Terry McCarl picked up his first win in 2014, driving Jeremy Scadden’s #6 to a win with the ASCS-Midwest series last Saturday night at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska. The Altoona, Iowa driver added a sixth place on Sunday to wrap up the weekend. He plans on being back in action this Saturday night at the 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa with the MOWA series.

TMAC’s night started with a heat win from the third starting position on Saturday. “Jeremy Scadden’s car rolls around the corner really nice,” he says. “It was pretty dry when we went out for the heat races. It was pretty much around the bottom. We had three or four restarts where somebody was spinning out and we’d do it again. We were able to get by Wayne (Johnson) there and we won by about a straightaway. It was a good start to the night.”

The banked 4/10-mile oval was reworked before the main event. “They redid the track before the feature, which was great,” says TMAC. “It’s tough to promote shows this time of year, because you want to start early enough that it’s not going to get too cold, but then it makes it more of an afternoon track for the cars. They did a good job.”

TMAC would redraw a starting spot inside row two for the feature. “We got to second right away,” he says. “Justin (Henderson) was slowly pulling away from me. I was just off a bit. We were a little loose, but we were hanging in there. I moved around to try something different, and we lost a spot.”

The team was able to make changes on an open red. “Unfortunately, for someone else, there was a red flag,” says TMAC. “Fortunately for us, it gave us some time to work on our car. We tightened it up a bit, and we were really good after that. We were able to get off the top of turn two and that worked in our favor. We were able to get the lead with five to go and pull off our first feature win of the year. It felt pretty good.”

The heat race draw stung a little bit in Sunday’s finale. “I drew the worst number,” says TMAC. “We started eighth in a heat race that was like a feature event. It was crazy! I knew we were in trouble. On the first start, Danny Lasoski was way up on the cushion and the inside row was way low. I went through the middle and got up to third by the backstraight. Unfortunately, they threw the yellow and said that Danny had jumped.”

TMAC made his way forward three positions by the checkers. “We took back off and we were able to get back to fifth,” he says. “We only missed the redraw by one, so we started ninth in the feature.”
The track was a bit of a chess game in the main event. “The track was really fun,” says TMAC. “You could run the top and the bottom, and there was a little bit of rubber in three and four. You really had to pay attention, so that is always fun. I thought we had a good shot at the $2,500 Durst Motorplex bonus (for winning both features). I just had the car a little unbalanced. That was my fault. We had some brake issues, and we had picked up a vibration in the heat race, that we thought we had found the cause of. We hadn’t. We’ll be checking the driveline out to see what that’s all about.”

A sixth place finish ended a solid weekend in Nebraska. “We got to fifth a couple of times, but we ended up sixth,” says TMAC. “Danny was right there in front of us most of the time. The track was fun, and it was always changing. He found a spot that the other guys didn’t find. You can’t complain with a win and a sixth.”
