Inside Line Promotions – VISALIA, Calif. (July 28, 2014) – Giovanni Scelzi was on a mission last Friday at Plaza Park Raceway.
“We qualified really good in both classes,” he said.
Scelzi established quick time during the nonwing outlaw qualifying and he timed in third quickest in the outlaw class to put himself in a good position for the remainder of the night.
Unfortunately, Scelzi lost a position in his nonwing outlaw heat race to place fifth. Rather than start on the pole of the feature by finishing in the top four of his heat race, Scelzi lined up on the inside of the fifth row for the 30-lap main event.
“Our car was a tad tight,” he said. “And there were so many yellows I never had to time to get going. I got up to fourth and lost my brakes with about five laps to go.”
Scelzi, who was in contention for a podium finish prior to losing his brakes, held on for a fifth-place result. It was his 13th top five of the season.
After placing third in his outlaw heat race earlier that night, Scelzi was set up to capture his fifth victory of the season.
“We got the jump off the bat,” he said. “I led 13 laps straight and then we dropped a valve is what we think happened. We were the fastest car pretty much all night. That sucked, but it’s going to happen.”
Scelzi was unable to finish the outlaw main event after the mechanical woes near the midpoint of the race.
