Inside Line Promotions – ALGER, Wash. (July 28, 2014) – Trey Starks was in contention for his first win of the season last weekend at Skagit Speedway.

Unfortunately, tire woes derailed Starks during the Bob’s Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals at Skagit Speedway.

“We just had some bad luck,” he said.

After qualifying seventh quickest to kick off the doubleheader last Friday, Starks started third in a heat race that locked the top three into the main event.

“We had a tire go flat with two laps to go in the heat race because the right rear wheel broke,” he said.

Starks held on for a fourth-place finish, which relegated him to the B Main. He then made a last-lap pass in traffic to win the consolation race and transfer into the main event, which he started 16th.

“We had a really good car and marched up through there,” he said. “I ran out of laps, but we had a good car that set us up for some points for the final day.”

Starks rallied to pick up a dozen positions en route to a fourth-place result, which was his seventh top five of the season. It also put him third in overall points heading into Saturday’s finale.

After finishing where he started – third – in the A Main scramble on Saturday, Starks lined up on the inside of the second row for the 40-lap feature.

“We ran second for almost the whole race,” he said. “Seth (Bergman) was pretty hard to touch. He was the guy to beat that night and I don’t think anybody was going to beat him. We raced hard and through traffic good.”

Starks maintained second place throughout the feature following his pass to earn the runner-up position on Lap 8. During a caution with 10 laps remaining he noticed a tire was going flat.

“We made it five laps and then the tire exploded,” he said. “I’ve never had one explode like that on me. It ripped the wing up. I thought the rear end broke or something.”

Starks slowed to bring out a caution following the issue with five laps remaining. His team replaced the tire in the work area and Starks returned to rally for an eighth-place finish.

He is currently headed toward the Midwest for this weekend’s 24th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, Thursday through Saturday. It will mark his first time at the half-mile track since 2012.

“It’s a good race to do well at,” he said. “We’re really looking forward to seeing what we can do. We feel like we have our best shot at this year because of what we’ve learned and the new equipment we have.”

Starks will also compete at Knoxville Raceway on Sunday for the Capitani Classic before racing in the Front Row Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Monday.
