Covington Leads Start To Finish To Claim Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals

Glenpool, Ok. (October 21, 2014) - It was a dream come true night for Matt Covington as the Glenpool, Oklahoma shoe rocketed to his third victory of the season. Covington claimed the Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals and added his name to its list of historic drivers. Matt was able to pocket the winning $4,000 at the famed half-mile oval with the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by MAVTV American Real.

The event was the 41st running of the Winter Nationals and James McElreath Memorial at the Devil's Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. Covington led start-to-finish for his fourth career Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour score.

"This feels better than I thought it would. I've always wanted to win a National Tour race here. This means more to me than my first ever National Tour win, by far tops them all. I love this track, I love this place," commented a jubilant Matt Covington. "This is a dream come true."

After finishing 3rd in the feature on Friday, Matt locked into Saturday night’s feature. Covington pulled the pole position in the redraw for his feature starting spot.

Two attempts at the start, Covington was able to out run Brandon Hanks as the A-Rock Material No. 95 committed to the hub of the Devil's Bowl Speedway. After catching traffic by the fifth round, a caution for Wayne Johnson brought the field single file.

At speed, Covington set a torrid pace around the half-mile oval with slower traffic in the picture again by Lap 12. Working every angle on the slower cars, Covington found all roads blocked, allowing Brad Loyet to make up some ground who was running in second. However, Loyet's night ended in a ball of fire as the power plant in the Vacuworx Global No. 05 gave up on Lap 24.

With a caution on Lap 26 for Tommy Bryant, followed by a red for Blake Hahn on Lap 28, Covington was able to remain in command of the field in his T&L Foundry/Triple X Chassis No.95, and held off Dusty Zomer who crossed runner-up for the second night in a row.

“Saturday night’s win was a pretty cool night for me,” stated Covington. “It was awesome for me to get a National Tour win at Devil’s Bowl. We have won some regional races at the Bowl, but never a national race. And to do it along with a lot of my family, friends, and sponsors that was there was pretty cool for me. We have had an up and down year and it’s just nice to get these last couple wins and strong runs like this team deserves. Hopefully we can take this win to help carry us into the STN and remainder of the season with more strong runs to build momentum into next year also.”

Matt and his Covington Motorsports team would like to thank his partners who made this win possible: T&L Foundry, Triple X Chassis, A-Rock Materials, Winters, Brodix, C.G. Martin Company, Factor 1 Racing, All-Star Performance, Outlaw Wings, Pro Shocks, DMI Components, Keizer Wheels, ButlerBuilt, Simpson Race Products, GME Steering, Wesmar Racing Engines, Bob Hurley RV, Eaton Industrial, Maxwell Oil, and Schoenfeld Headers for their support in 2014.
