Brian Brown – Ronald Laney Memorial in Florida up Next!

(Bill W) January 27, 2015 – The Brian Brown Racing Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team is readying for the upcoming Ronald Laney Memorial at East Bay Raceway Park near Tampa, Florida February 19-21. They wrapped up the “Winter Heat” event earlier this month at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona. The highlight was a Tuesday podium finish that saw a charge from 12th to third.

Your first weekend in Yuma ended with a tough crash. You rebounded well the following Tuesday.

After the rough night we had the Saturday before, it showed how well Maxim Chassis are built, and how good Chad (Morgan) and Zac (Thomas) are at putting together a new car. We weren’t as good as we needed to be early in the night, but we got it going later.

You started twelfth, but the race got off to a rocky start.

On the very first lap, we got into the back of the 2L car (Logan Forler). That knocked our nose wing back. To be able to move forward despite that, made for a good night.

It was definitely a good night. You were able to run up to the leaders after losing your nose wing.

We were able to march up there, and a few dropped out. We were able to get to third. Paul (McMahan) and Steve (Kinser) were out there a ways. We actually were able to run them down pretty well, and then we had an open red.

How did the red affect the race?

I was running a little different line than those guys were. I think during the red, their crew was able to tell them where I was at. When they dropped the green, I wasn’t as good and they got better. We were able to finish third, which was good for us. I was proud of the whole team.

Not only did you finish third, but you brought home a big bonus as well.

I’m really thankful for Here 2 Wire, Inc. for putting up the $2,000 Hard-charger bonus. It was nice to have that bonus on top of everything else.

You came back on Friday (January 9), and your heat and Qualifier went well.

It was a different night. We were pretty good in the heat and the Qualifier (which he won). That was really the first time we were out in clean air on the trip. Lap time-wise, we were about a half-second better than the field. If you are running second, you’re automatically going to be two to three-tenths slower, just because of the air.

You started sixth in the main event. Did you make any changes to the car?

We made some small adjustments for the A, but we were just too tight and couldn’t turn. It was really unfortunate, because we felt starting that close to the front, we could challenge for a win. We were really lucky to run seventh.

Saturday, you were a little bit a victim of your draw.

Saturday night’s track was a little drier from the get-go. In the heats, wherever you were in turn two, was going to be pretty much where you finished. We kept adjusting on the car all night long, but I’m not so sure that we weren’t making the car worse.

You were able to grab the last transfer to the A through the B.

We had to start eighth in the B, and luckily we were able to finish there and make the A. Paul McMahan had one of the fastest cars all week and finished behind us. That shows you the level of the competition, and the importance of track position.

You were able to get up to move up five spots or so in the A. How do you look back on your trip to Yuma?

The nice thing about going out there was it was 75 or 80 degrees and it was around 0 back home. We were able to make a little money, other than the crash. We really enjoyed “Winter Heat”, and we’re looking forward to going back next year. Greg Burgess, Tommy Estes and everyone at the casino put on a top-flight, top-notch five-day event. I hope people that weren’t able to go this year will in the future. This event has a huge potential.
