Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (April 27, 2015) – Ryan Smith registered a pair of fifth-place results on his home turf against the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions last weekend.
“It was great to get two top fives against that level of competition, especially on two tracks I’m more familiar with,” he said. “We had a great weekend and it gives us a lot of confidence to continue to run well with the All Stars.”
Smith opened the weekend on Friday at Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pa., where he qualified eighth quickest overall and fourth quickest of his group. That put him on the pole of a heat race, which he won to lock into the dash.
“With the new All Star format it’s critical to time well and take advantage of starting on the front row of a heat race,” he said. “We were able to do that, but unfortunately we pulled a high number to start at the back of the dash.”
Smith finished 10th in the dash to line up on the outside of the fifth row for the main event.
“The track started to get more racy once we got into the feature,” he said. “You could move around a lot more compared to early in the night. We took what we could get and put together consistent laps to finish with a top five.”
Smith’s fifth-place result gave the team momentum entering Saturday’s $15,000-to-win Bob Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway, where the night played out much like the previous evening.
Smith timed in ninth quickest overall and fourth in his group to start on the pole of a heat race, which he won to qualify for the dash. He then placed eighth in the dash to line up on the outside of the fourth row for the feature.
“We battled inside the top 10 for the whole race,” he said. “I made a couple of passes and then took advantage of a late caution to pass another driver with only a few laps remaining to get a top five.”
Smith’s fifth-place finish was his third top five in four All Star races this season. He currently ranks second in the championship standings and is only 12 points out of the lead entering All Star races this Friday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa., and Saturday at Mercer Raceway Park in Mercer, Pa.
