Unfortunately, for Brian Brown and the Casey’s General Stores/FVP #21 team, Mother Nature played the biggest hand at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday with the World of Outlaws. The team felt they were in contention after advancing to fifth in the Dash. Unfortunately, a three and a half hour rain delay was followed by fog during the A main. The race was stopped after fifteen laps, with the Grain Valley, Missouri driver in the fourth spot.
Things started for you with the Outlaws Friday at the Crawford County Speedway in Denison, Iowa. There was a new format for the WoO with two flights of cars in qualifying.
We were quickest in hot laps and we just needed to back that up in qualifying. Unfortunately, some guys picked it up and we ended up fourth quick, which isn’t where you want to be with the new format.
You finished fourth in your heat, which set you up starting 12th in the A main after an hour rain delay.
I tried to make a big move on the start and kind of biked it up on two wheels. We lost three or four spots. It was a one or two-lane track and we were able to pass a few cars and get back to twelfth.
The reconfigured the track in Denison a couple years ago, and it is wide. Unfortunately, the rain played havoc. I know talking to several drivers, they’re looking forward to getting back there.
We were glad just to get the race in. With us going back with the NSL later in the year (July 24), you want any notes that you can have. I think it will provide some dividends when we head back there.
You were sixth quick in the first flight on Saturday at Knoxville.
We were hoping to be a little better qualifying. We were sixth quick in our flight and eighth overall. We were just a little bit off. We’ll put our heads together this week and find any speed that we can get. We don’t feel this is our #1 engine, we hurt that one a couple weeks ago. We’ll have that one back for the Nationals.
That put you on the front row of the heat.
We made some good laps there and we were able to get the lead and win it. We made a few changes for the Dash. We got ourselves a little bit tighter than we wanted, but we were able to get to fifth (from seventh). By the end, we were able to challenge Kerry and Ian (Madsen) for third. At that point, we felt we had a shot to contend.
Unfortunately, we went from a dry-slick track with two or three grooves to rain falling and a three and a half hour delay. Then the fog came when the feature rolled out!
The rain came and made a pretty narrow track. We changed our car around and got it pretty good for the A. We were able to go from fifth to fourth. The fog…you’ve thought you’ve seen everything at Knoxville and that happens. It was pretty freaky for a bit. Being able to see about ten feet in front of you at 140 miles per hour…it definitely puts you on your toes. The next time we travel home at 65 miles per hour in the fog, it should be a breeze.
I know you’ll be back at Knoxville on Saturday, but what else do you have planned this weekend?
We’re weighing the options of Salina, Kansas (with ASCS National) on Friday. We’re also looking at maybe California, Missouri on Sunday. That race looks interesting. We haven’t been there in a few years. Maybe we’ll show up, you never know.
