Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (July 6, 2015) – Johnny Herrera was on fire throughout the Fred Brownfield Classic last weekend at Grays Harbor Raceway.

Herrera earned a pair of top-two finishes, including his first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour victory of the season during the finale on Saturday.

“It’s a big momentum boost for myself and the team,” he said. “You always go out to win, but it’s been a while since we’ve won. I don’t beat myself up. It’s tough to win. You’ve got to put yourself in the right position and we did that. Hopefully we can continue this momentum.”

Herrera opened the doubleheader, which was taped for a delayed television broadcast on MAVTV, on Friday by advancing from third to second place during a heat race on the 3/8-mile oval. That earned him a spot in the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 5 to start the main event on the inside of the third row.

“I’ve always liked running at Grays Harbor,” he said. “We were good the first night. I got together with a couple of guys on slide jobs and made some people mad. It was a lot harder to get past guys on the first night than the second. There was a lot of blocking and guys getting wide with their cars.”

Herrera picked up a trio of positions to post a second-place result, which locked him into the redraw for Saturday’s 30-lap feature.

“You want to win, but with the top four being locked in it’s important to earn one of those positions,” he said. “It’s just one less thing that could go wrong the next day. We were happy with our finish on Friday.”

Saturday began with Herrera pulling the No. 5 for the second straight night.

“For some reason on the start everyone went to the bottom, especially in turns one and two,” he said. “I did that for about two laps and wasn’t really going anywhere. I jumped to the top before everyone else did and got the momentum going. We passed a car or two and then we started making momentum.”

Herrera took the lead on Lap 7 and he cruised to his third victory of the season. It marked his first ASCS National Tour triumph since September 2013.

The team will be off this weekend before Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour races on July 17 at Electric City Speedway in Great Falls, Mont., and July 18 at Billings Motorsports Park in Billings, Mont.
