Inside Line Promotions – LEBANON, Ore. (July 6, 2015) – Dominic Scelzi is all smiles following a pair of top-10 finishes at new tracks last week.

Scelzi and car owner Dan Monhoff earned seventh-place results during the first two Western Sprint Tour Speedweek races before the event ended early because of misfortune.

“I had an absolute blast being able to travel up through Oregon with my mom, brother, girlfriend and Brent Ventura,” he said. “Every single race track was racy, slick, wide and smooth. The hospitality was amazing. It was a lot of fun being able to do that.”

Scelzi debuted at Siskiyou Motor Speedway in Yreka, Calif., a week ago Sunday by qualifying third quickest. He then advanced from sixth to fifth place during a heat race to earn the ninth starting position for the main event.

“In the heat race the track was one lane around the bottom,” he said. “It was hard for us to get positions. We got into fifth right away and fought for fourth, but weren’t able to get it. Then the track in the main event was extremely slick to the top of the race track. I was able to run the bottom a little. I got up to sixth, but unfortunately the yellow came out and moved me back to seventh.”

Scelzi spent a majority of the feature in a torrid battle for a top five before he ended with a seventh-place result.

Southern Oregon Speedway in White City, Ore., hosted Speedweek Round 2 on Monday. Scelzi qualified 12th quickest and manuevered from fourth to the lead in a heat race before losing the top spot on the last lap.

“The track was a lot flatter and a little bigger than Yreka,” he said. “We went out really late for qualifying, which hurt us a lot. I got the lead in the heat race and led every lap until the yellow came out on the white flag lap. Kyle Hirst got around me on the bottom in turns one and two on the last lap and stole it.”

That lined Scelzi up on the inside of the fifth row for the main event.

“I drove it up to fourth with two laps left and on the white flag a lapped car half spun in front of me,” he said. “I got out of the gas, which let three cars get by me. I had to check up and it cost me. We had a really good run going.”

The team, which had been battling the engine overheating, elected to skip Speedweek Round 3 at Coos Bay Speedway in Coos Bay, Ore., last Tuesday. They returned to action on Thursday at Willamette Speedway, where Scelzi timed in 11th quickest during split qualifying.

Scelzi led most of a heat race after starting on the outside of the front row before Hirst made another last-lap pass.

“Hirst got me again on the last lap around the top so that lined me up 16th for the main event,” he said. “I got up to ninth in nine laps and ended up losing my brakes going three wide for seventh place. I got out of the gas and as soon as I did the red flag came out so I coasted to a stop.”

A small brake line fire ensued, which knocked Scelzi out of the event with a 21st-place result. The team decided to skip the final two Speedweek races and returned to California.

Scelzi will return to his family sprint car this Friday and Saturday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., for the Howard Kaeding Classic with the Civil War Sprint Car Series and the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series.

He has earned a top-10 finish during all 17 sprint car features at the quarter-mile track.
