Inside Line Promotions – SUNNYVALE, Texas (Aug. 4, 2015) – Sam Hafertepe Jr. wants to finish one spot better during the 25th annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals than he did last year.
Hafertepe Jr. posted a career-best second-place finish during the marquee event at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, last season.
“The goal for every racer is to put together two great weeks during the Knoxville Nationals,” he said. “We did that last year and that’s my intention when the action begins this week.”
Hafertepe Jr., who was unable to compete last weekend in Canada with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series because the racing hauler wasn’t permitted to cross the border, will pilot a Hill’s Racing Team entry this Thursday during preliminary competition and Saturday at the finale.
“Qualifying is critical with the Knoxville Nationals format and last year we timed in second quickest, which set us up for the rest of the weekend,” he said.
Hafertepe Jr. then advanced from sixth to second place during a heat race before placing 10th in the main event to cap preliminary competition. It was good enough to lock him into the fourth starting position for the finale.
“We ran the bottom really well, especially in turns three and four,” he said. “I think that was our advantage and it helped us earn a second-place result.”
Hafertepe Jr., who recently returned to sprint car competition following a 12-week absence because of a broken arm, hasn’t competed at Knoxville Raceway since the 410 Knoxville Nationals last August.
“I don’t think that will hurt us,” he said. “It’s always good to get as many laps as possible at a track each season, but we have turned a lot of laps throughout the years at Knoxville. I think we’ll be in a good position from the start of the event.”
