Rico Thrills Crowd in Missouri

PETERSEN MEDIA: Making the trip back to Indiana to prepare for a busy month of midget races, Rico Abreu was in action with the POWRi midgets, where he tallied second and third place finishes on Friday and Saturday as we charged from the sixth and seventh row both nights.

Friday night saw Abreu and his Keith Kunz team show up at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, MO for the first of two nights of action in the ‘Show Me State’.

Lining up in the 11th spot, Rico simply put on a display of passing, as the youngster used up every inch of real estate on his magnificent charge.

“Keith and the boys had this thing perfect,” said Abreu. “The track started out right on the top and gradually moved down, and we were really able to go anywhere we needed to.”

Racing into the top-five late in the feature, Abreu was able to get past Blake Hahn to grab the fourth spot, where he then hooked up in a very entertaining battle with Tyler Thomas for the third spot.

Abreu would get past Thomas on the final lap to round out the podium.

“It was fun tonight,” said Abreu. “I really feel like I’m learning a lot in these midgets, and know were just knocking on the door for a win now.”

Saturday night saw the series move to Springfield, MO and Abreu turned in nearly an identical performance.

This time starting in the seventh row, in the 13th spot, Rico knew he had to get rolling early before the track took rubber.

The St. Helena, CA driver was stout as he raced his way though the field and got into the third spot behind Jonathan Beason.

Abreu capitalized on Beason’s misfortune and took over the second spot, and made a brilliant move on Michael Pickens for the lead with two-to-go, but the caution waved, negating the pass, and putting Abreu in second on the restart.

During the final two laps, Abreu wasn’t able to get close to Pickens, and he settled for second.

“I wish that caution wouldn’t of came out, because I think we were good enough to hold off Pickens and get the win,” Abreu explained. “Overall we were good, but I think I used my tires up trying to get to the front, and had nothing on that last restart.”

Rico and his team would like to thank Abreu Vineyards, Toyota, ButlerBuilt, Kaeding Performance, Stadelhofer Construction, Outlaw Wings, Swift Metal Finishings, and Petersen Media for their partnership.

ON TAP: Abreu will now get really busy in the midget as he kicks off USAC Midget Week on Wednesday at Gas City.
