Finale of Dirt Cup for Trey Starks Postponed by Rain

Puyallup, Wash.—June 19, 2012 — A lot of variables are involved in sprint car racing. Some can be controlled by a driver, the crew and their team, while others cannot. One that can never be harnessed is Mother Nature. After clear skies and pleasant temperatures greeted competitors each of the first two nights of the Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., rain postponed the finale for Trey Starks and the rest of the drivers that were gathered at the high-banked three-tenths-mile bullring.

The 41st Annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup Presented by Goodyear will now conclude on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Skagit Speedway, which is the day before the two-night World of Outlaws event at the track.

“It was definitely a bummer getting rained out,” said Starks. “It kind of throws you off after running the same track two nights in-a-row and you’ll come back on a random night to finish the event. The race might be a little different in August and the adrenaline might not be flowing like it was this past weekend. On the opposite side of it, that will be a good tune-up for the World of Outlaws races that are coming up after it.”

In the preliminary feature on the second night of the Dirt Cup on Friday, June 15, Starks charged from the 22nd starting position all the way up to 11th with eight laps to go and would end up finishing 13th. He opened the night by turning the 27th-fastest lap in time trials of the nearly 40 entries. He would start and finish the second heat race in the sixth spot, which put him in the B-Main. The teenage driver would finish sixth in the B-Main to earn a spot in the 30-lap preliminary feature.

“The track was really slick all weekend, and pretty dusty and hard to see at times,” noted Starks. “The main thing was staying out of some of the big wrecks and trying to dodge cars as well as go by them. We had our car working pretty good. It’s not that we were really better than anyone else, we just ran a smooth race and finished ahead of the guys who didn’t.”

Starks opened the Dirt Cup on Thursday, June 14, by recording the 25th-fastest lap in time trials. The 16-year-old finished fourth in the fifth heat race, which put him in the B-Main, where he would finish seventh to again earn the final spot in the 30-lap preliminary feature. He started 22nd in the main event and would finish 18th.

Starks and the entire Starks Racing team will take this weekend off, following the busy stretch of races over the last two weeks. The native of Puyallup, Wash., will return to the track on Saturday, June 30 at Skagit, where he has he made five starts this season, earning three Top-Five finishes.

“Running week after week after week like we have been, it will be weird to miss a week and sometimes when you miss a week it feels like you miss a whole month,” explained Starks. “It’s also good to take a week off and clear your mind and just relax and not have to worry about anything. We’ll relax this weekend and regroup for the next portion of our season coming up.”
