Saturday night June 23 was a night of exciting VRA Sprint Car racing that saw Clark Templeman III take his second win in a row over a top notch field that included two past VRA Champions, Kevin Kierce and Luis Espinoza, as well as Arizona driver Zach Sawyers and point leader Kyle Smith. Templeman started 12th in the 16 car field and took advantage of a lap two incident, involving Justin Kierce, Luis Espinoza Tom Hendricks and Kevin Kierce, to quickly move toward the front and after Sawyers led the first seventeen laps he passed the young charger and went on to take the win with Sawyers close behind. The race also saw Kevin Kierce come from the back to finish third after being upside down in the lap two incident. Rounding out the top five were Brian Camarillo in fourth and season point leader Kyle Smith in fifth. The night saw two heat races run, with wins going to Kyle Smith in the Extreme Muffler Heat One and returning past champion Kevin Kierce in the LRB Manufacturing Heat Two. Kyle Smith continues in the point lead by 180 points over Clark Templeman III and 210 over Brian Camarillo after seven races.
VRA Dwarf Cars put on another exciting night of racing for the fans in attendance. In Seniors the win went to Mike Neal followed by Bob Kaufman, Tim Morse, Bill VanPraag and Tom Stephens Sr. Their heat race win went to Mike Neal. In Pro action the main event win went to point leader Ray Estrada followed Luke Boles, Johnny Conely, Thomas Velasquez and Eric Moore. Heat race wins went to Luke Boles and Eric Moore. Again this week both Dwarf Car classes ran fast and smooth and easily finished in their 20 minutes 20 lap time frame. All drivers should be proud of this accomplishment as it has shown just how good their racing can be.
VRA Focus Midgets were on hand and ran two heat races with wins going to Cole Custer and Brennan Rogers. Their 20 lap feature was won by Cole Custer followed by Parker Colston, Austin Blair, Brennan Rogers and Cory Elliot. After four races in the 2012 season Parker Colston leads Brennan Rogers by 90 points in the point race.
VRA Mod Lites also were on the card Saturday night. VRA Senior Sprint regular Chris Meredith took his first Mod Lite win over former VRA Dwarf Car Champion Mike Sweeney, Kevin Alverson, Dave Dotson and Chris Kornder. Their one heat race went to Mike Sweeney. Mike Sweeney moved into the season point lead by100 points over Dave Dotson.
The final classes racing Saturday were our kids classes. In Junior Midgets, 2011 series champ Devin McCree took the win and continues to hold the point lead by 85 points over Miles Hedrick and Tommy Velasquez III. Finishing second was Oliver Blades, third went to Miles Hedrick, fourth went to Tommy Velasquez with Mike Long taking fifth. Their heat race win went to Oliver Blades. In VRA Superchargers the win went to Nick Velasquez, followed by J D Brown. Nick Velasquez continues to lead in the point race after 4 races. In Pistons, the feature went to Garrett Egan after on track winner Zack Chavez 's team refused an engine tear down and was DQ’d. Finishing second was Blake Hendricks followed by Bailey Hendricks.
Ventura Raceway now takes a two week break in our 2012 season while events are held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds that keep us from competing. We will return to action on Saturday July 14, with a full program of racing action featuring VRA Midgets, Senior Sprints, VRA Dwarf Cars, VRA Focus Midgets, Go Karts and our kids classes.
