Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 4, 2022) – David Gravel garnered his 35th top-five result of the season last Friday at Williams Grove Speedway.

The Big Game Motorsports driver kicked off the opening round of the Champion Racing Oil National Open by qualifying fourth quickest in his group. He then won a heat race to advance into the dash. A third-place result lined him up on the inside of the second row in the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series main event.

“We qualified just good enough to get on the front row of a heat race,” he said. “We got a good jump to win the heat. We had a good dash draw. We got a good jump on that as well and ran third. It all started pretty well.

“In the A Mains we’ve been struggling at Williams Grove with a full fuel load. I went from third to sixth in one lap. The fourth-place guy got a jump on me and got my air messed up in turns one and two. I fell to fifth down the backstretch. I went to the top in turns three and four and somebody passed me down low so I fell to sixth.”

Gravel gained a position back before rain wiped out the remainder of the race. He was credited with a fifth-place finish.

“Running fifth isn’t what we wanted, but it was a learning experience and I think we’ll be better for it,” he said. “It opened our eyes up on Friday and we were looking forward to another opportunity to try some things to combat our issue we’ve had.”

Saturday’s event finale at Williams Grove Speedway was postponed to Oct. 22 because of inclement weather.

“It’s one of the tracks we feel we haven’t been right at,” Gravel said. “Williams Grove is one where we haven’t been happy with our A Main performances. It’s a unique place and we have to do unique things to make it right.”

Next up is the Nittany Showdown this Friday and Saturday at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Pa. Gravel placed sixth and second, respectively, during last year’s event.

“Earlier in the year we struggled at Port Royal, but at this event last year we ran really well the second night,” he said. “We’ll try some things to get better and see what we get. The weather will probably be cooler so the track will be fast.”
