National Breast Cancer Awareness Month Brings Ventura Raceway and Ribbons Of Life Together

(Oxnard CA, Noel Dawson, October 2nd) During the month of October, Ventura Raceway will join with Ribbons Of life to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast Cancer afflicts hundreds of thousands of women worldwide and over 500 are diagnosed in Ventura County each year.

Breast cancer hit close to home at Ventura Raceway earlier this year with Scorer Cindy Addison’s diagnosis. First as a driver and now as an assistant scorer, Cindy has been an integral part of Ventura Raceway for many years. When Cindy was diagnosed, she was determined not to let it keep her from the racetrack. Cindy is quick to express her gratitude to all her friends and family at the track: “When I walk through the pits or concession area people ask how I’m doing, and when they ask, I do feel they are concerned, not just asking to be polite.” Even with surgery on July 6th, Cindy did not let it prevent her from taking her spot in the tower at the next race just 8 days later on July 14th. Cindy will begin her chemotherapy treatments in October but says you can expect to see her every Saturday night.

Ribbons of Life began on January 1, 2008 to serve Ventura County as place for those diagnosed with breast cancer to get support and information to help them through difficult times. Led by Founder and President, Lisa Barreto with the help of Fundraising Chairwoman, Lori Stephens, and a dedicated professional volunteer board, RoL’s goal is to raise funds to open Ventura County’s first independent breast resource center. RoL is anxious to begin this new partnership: “We appreciate those at Ventura Raceway who know how to rev up their motors to provide Ribbons of Life with the jump start we need”, states Barreto. “Getting the crowds going to cheer us on in a different race is thrilling to us. Nothing beats a community of motor sports people who know how to boost us into overdrive. They keep us going as we try to restart our lives while educating our community. Thanks Ventura Raceway for rallying 'round the track for us.”, Barreto concluded.

Ventura Raceway will be holding a fundraising drive to help RoL reach their goal. During the October 6th and 27th events, Ribbons of Life will have a display in the midway area where fans can stop by for more information about RoL or to make a donation. Along with the display, one of Cindy’s old driving helmets will be used as the collection point for donations.

On October 6th, the VRA Midgets will finish up their 2012 season along with the Senior Sprints, Dwarf Cars, Mod Lites, Go-Karts, and our Junior Divisions. October 27th will have the VRA Sprint Cars in their final tune-up before the All Coast Challenge. Joining the Sprint Cars will be the Senior Sprints, Dwarf Cars, Sport Compacts, Mod Lites, Quads, and the Junior Divisions.
