Swindell Sweeps ASCS Sprints at 39th Annual Winter Nationals

Mesquite, TX (Oct 20) - Jeff Swindell led only one lap of the finale of the 39th Annual Winter Nationals ASCS Outlaw Sprints feature at Devil's Bowl Speedway Saturday night. But it was the all important final lap, to match is victory Friday night.

Patrik Daniel capped his 2012 Late Model Championship with a victory in the final feature. Jimmy Criswell III topped the USA Limited Modifieds on their final race of the years. Jimmy Staats won his second straight USA Limited Modifieds Championship. Previously Danny Caldwell claimed the 2012 USA Modifieds Championship, and Harry Hronas took the 2012 Street Stock title.

#94 Jeff Swindell - ASCS Sprints Winner

Danny Lasoski charged from the outside front row to lead the ASCS Lucas Oil Outlaw Sprint Cars feature. Swindell started on the second row with the redraw.

Lasoski had no trouble staying out front on a clear track early in the race. Wright was able to pull alongside him a couple times in lapped traffic near the 30-lap race mid-point. But a couple cautions gave Lasoski a clear track for the rest of the race.

Swindell started on the inside second row, but had to battle with Jason Johnson for the third position for half the race. Swindell managed to get past Wright for the second spot after a restart with a few laps to go. The yellow flag flew again with only two laps to the checkered flag. Swindell was right behind Lasoski after they took the green flag. As the white flag flew, Swindell was even as they crossed under the flag, and pulled ahead diving low into turn one. Wright was third at the checkered flag, with Johnson fourth and Justin Henderson taking fifth.

Gary Taylor and Andy Shouse won the twin B Mains. Danny Jennings, Zach Chappel, Kevin Swindell, Henderson and Wright won the heats.

This was Gary Wright's final ASCS race at Devil's Bowl after a career that has seen championships in several sprint car series, and track championships at Devil's Bowl, where he 'grew up' while helping on his father's race car. Earlier in the evening Wright was honored by ASCS Founders Emmett and Fuzzy Hahn and Devil's Bowl Promoters Lanny and Beverly Edwards for his long career and contributions to sprint car racing in Texas and the region.

#75 Patrik Daniel - Late Models Winner

Loni Richardson claimed the lead in the late model main from the outside front row as the green flag dropped.

Pole sitter Johnny Philpot, Jr. held second with fifth starting Daniel running fourth for the first few laps.

A caution on the fourth lap in the tight racing sent second and third place Philpot and Max Eddie Thomas to the pits. On the restart, Wendall Bolden briefly held the runner-up spot behind Richardson. Daniel soon took second.

With just a few laps to go, Richardson could not hold the top of turn two, and slipped back to fourth.

Daniel charged into the lead held off Tom Lorenz to take the win, followed by Bolden and Richardson.

Bolden and Richardson won the heats.

Daniel's win was his fifth this year as he won the Late Model Championship.

#56 Jimmy Criswell, III - USA Limited Modifieds Winner

Michael Daniels led the 22 car USA Limited Modifieds from the outside front row after the green flag dropped.

Daniels was able to stay out front after two cautions on the third lap, but he had Tom Lorenz and Jimmy Criswell, III right behind him.

Two laps later Criswell claimed second, and took the lead a couple trips later around the half-mile oval.

Daniels fell back late in the race, with Lorenz battling Wally Beaty right behind Criswell in the final run to the checkered flag. Wally Beaty took second with Lornez third at the checkered flag. Cody Simpson and Daniel rounded out the top five.

Tim Simmons, Criswell, Steve Nabors and Andy Wojtaszizyk with Simpson winning the B Main.

2012 Champion Jimmy Staats has a long night, being relegated to the B main after finishing sixth in his heat, and working up to transfer to the A. He finished 8th after starting 18th.
