Following strong start, IRA weekend ends in disappointment, uncertainty for Arenz

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) September 13, 2023 – After turning in an impressive top five A-main showing in his debut appearance at Gondik Law Speedway in Superior, Wis. on Friday, Sept. 8, a promising weekend of Bumper to Bumper Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car competition ended in heartbreak for Travis Arenz and the Travis Arenz Motorsports team as a terminal engine issue relegated their 25T car to the sidelines for the 23rd annual Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis. on Saturday, Sept. 9 and left the team’s status for the final two races of the 2023 IRA campaign in doubt.

With 23 cars on hand, Arenz opened the Northern Nationals at the four-tenths mile high-banked Gondik Law Speedway clay oval by registering the fourth fastest qualifying lap in 15.714 seconds.

The 2021 and 2022 Midwest Sprint Car Association and Plymouth Dirt Track Racing 360 Sprint Car champion started third and endured two caution periods and a spirited duel with Danny Schlafer to place fourth in the first eight-lap IRA heat race.

After starting fifth in the 25-lap IRA main event, the Sheboygan Falls, Wis. competitor was running fifth when the second caution flag of the race flew on lap 14 for a spin involving Preston Ruh.

When the race resumed Arenz maneuvered his way past Scotty Thiel to take over fourth on lap 15. Arenz held on over the final 10 laps to secure a fourth place A-main showing and his 12th top-five and 15th top-10 A-main showing of the 2023 season in a race won by Bill Balog.

“I enjoyed Gondik Law Speedway,” Arenz said. “It definitely was technical at the beginning with how dry the track was, so going out early in qualifying was a huge plus to get the night going in the right direction. We continued to get faster throughout the night. We got some set-up advice for the feature that ended up being a huge help.”

On Saturday, Sept. 9, Arenz was set to make his Cedar Lake Speedway debut for the IRA’s annual Jerry Richert Memorial. However, a serious engine issue was discovered prior to the start of the racing program, which prevented Arenz from competing in the event and put the team’s participation in the final two races of the 2023 IRA season in jeopardy.

“During maintenance on Saturday, I found the piston ring on top of the cylinder 2 piston, which ended our weekend,” Arenz said. “We were already at the very end of our engine’s life for the year. As of now, I don’t have another motor to put in.”

The team is currently seeking a motor to rent for the final two events of the 2023 Bumper to Bumper IRA 410 Sprint Car Series season at 141 Speedway in Francis Creek, Wis. on Saturday, Sept. 16 and The Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wis. on Saturday, Sept. 30.

Arenz is currently third in the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprint Car Series point standings, 110 points behind second place Jordan Goldesberry and 82 points ahead of fourth place Russel Borland, with two events remaining on the 2023 IRA schedule.
