Tuesdays with TMAC – Stockton Next!

(Bill W) March 12, 2013 – After two nights of racing in Las Vegas, Terry McCarl is readying his machine at Country Builders Construction headquarters in California for upcoming races beginning at Stockton on March 22. This week, he’ll fly home for son Carson’s Senior Trip/Spring Break before rejoining the Outlaws until Knoxville Raceway gets underway in the latter part of April.

Qualifying was the key in a tough World of Outlaws field in Vegas, and TMAC was 25th quick both nights. “It was a tough event,” he says. “There were 40 cars, and they were good ones. It was kind of like Volusia. A late number the first night hurt us a bit, but we weren’t fast hot lapping either. I don’t know where we missed it really. I’m trying a new shock package and there are a few things that we are trying out.”

Despite starting outside the invert in seventh, TMAC got into the fifth and final transfer spot to the main event. “We made it through there, and we did it by passing people,” he says. “We were really good in the feature too. We started 22nd and I got to 13th fast. We had a restart and I was on top. I was a little tight to be up there, and I got pushed to the middle. I got hit in the left front. It cracked a yield bearing in the left front hub. I tried to keep going, but I didn’t know what was going on. Eventually, I had to pull off.”

A promising practice session didn’t lead to a good night in Thursday’s finale. “I was ninth quick hot lapping, and I thought we were pretty good,” says TMAC. “I tried a new deal with the shocks. I was super loose qualifying in three and four. We were 25th again.”

The field reminded TMAC of the one he bested in Volusia, but this time he was on the wrong end position-wise. “We had a super-tough heat, and we didn’t get qualified,” he says. “I got to fifth in the B, and was on Kraig Kinser and Steve (Kinser) in the end. I just needed a yellow or something. We just missed it by one. When there are 40 cars in the pits and everyone is so close, you need to qualify better. It was tough for everyone.”

TMAC has been preparing the TMAC Motorsports sprinter for upcoming California action at Country Builders Construction headquarters. “I’m headed home today,” says the Altoona, Iowa driver. “I’ve been getting the car ready for Stockton. We want to do well for Country Builders out here.”

Family will take precedence this weekend. “I’m headed back for Carson’s Senior Trip,” says TMAC. “It’s kind of neat that all the parents and students go somewhere for Spring Break. You get 100 or so people from Altoona all together. It’s really fun for the families. I don’t want to miss that with Carson. It’s tough to miss Tulare, but we’ll be back for Stockton and all the Outlaw shows until Knoxville starts.”

This Month in TMAC History!

In March of 2006, TMAC set a new track record in time trials with the World of Outlaws at the raceway at United Sports Arizona near Tucson (now known as Tucson International Raceway). He circled the 3/8 mile oval in 13.127 seconds. He would finish eighth in the feature after starting seventh.
