New Faces Challenge Swanson For 2013 VRA Midget Title

(March 11, 2013, Cliff Morgan, Ventura Raceway) OXNARD, CA - Ventura Raceway returns to action this Saturday night, March 16, for its second event of the new 2013 season. After last week's rainout, we will highlight six of our adult classes and three of our kid's divisions in exciting short track oval racing tonight. VRA Midgets, IMCA Modifieds, VRA Sport Compacts, VRA Dwarf Cars, VRA Hobby Stocks, Focus Midgets and our VRA Kids Classes will all be in action on the Ventura County Fairgrounds’ 1/5th mile oval tonight.

VRA Midgets will be opening their 2013 season Saturday night. 2012 Series Champion Cody Swanson will open his title defense against Greg Edenholm, Ronnie Gardner, Randi Pankratz, Kyle Smith and all the regular VRA Midget drivers. Several USAC Western States drivers are also expected to be there to go for the win in their 30 lap main event. These high powered racers put on outstanding races each time they race here and tonight should be no exception.

IMCA Modifieds will open their 2013 season after last week’s rainout. 2012 track champion Jack Parker leads the field into competition as he goes for another series championship All the Ventura IMCA Regulars including Brad Prows, the Rodarte brothers, Steve Bulpit and others are expected to be there to get their season started. These V8 powered open wheel stock cars will keep you on the edge of your seat as they battle on Ventura's tight 1/5 mile oval.

The VRA Sport Compacts opener was also delayed one week by rain. These four cylinder racer cars are the entry level class for racers getting started in dirt track oval racing. Last year’s champion Zack Peterson is back to try to keep all the other Sport Compact competitors behind him in the 2013 season point race.

VRA Dwarf Cars return to action this weekend with opening night winners Brent Stevens in Pros and Bob Kaufman in Seniors expected to be back to do for two in a row against the top competitors in each class. Other racers expected to be on hand to try to get their first wins in 2013 include Mile Lewis, Bill Van Praag, Tom Stephens Sr., Curt Cook in Seniors and Eric Alton, Johnny and Tim Conley, Kevin Calvo, Randy Gordon, and many others in Pros.

VRA Focus Midgets will be back Saturday night with opening night winner Wally Pankratz trying to take another win over a field of young up and coming drivers in this class. These spec Ford Focus powered midget racers have been a starting point for several of the young stars in open wheel competition across the US.

Our new VRA Hobby Stock Class returns with opening night race winner Gary Curtis back to defend his point lead and win. This new class features V8 powered stock cars racing around Ventura's 1/5 mile oval. This class was a mainstay in Ventura's early years and it is hoped that this class will return to its highly competitive nature in 2013.

The final group racing this week is the VRA Kids Classes made up of Junior Midgets, Mini Dwarf Pistons and Mini Dwarf Superchargers. Opening night winners J D Brown in Superchargers, Blake Hendricks in Pistons and Nick Velasquez will be going for their second win in 2013 this weekend.
