The 2013 Midwest Sprint Car Association kicked off its first night of race action with the Wipperfurth Memorial at the Beaver Dam Raceway this past Saturday night. After struggling throughout the night with fueling issues, Scotty Thiel still managed to hold on to a top five finish in the A-main event.
After a grand prix qualifying session took place in hot laps, Thiel’s lap time was good enough to place him on the second row of the first heat race. The field would come to take the green flag for the first time in 2013 and Thiel began to work his way up. After a few short laps, Scotty used the top side to take over the second position and would take finish off the ten lap event in the second spot. After the invert, Thiel would go to start the night’s 25 lap Wipperfurth Memorial A-Main event.
A full 24 car field set pace on the Beaver Dam Raceway and would get the command to go give the four wide salute to the fans formation. The field bunched back up and prepared to take the green flag. On the first attempt, Scotty charged hard into turn one and would take over the lead going down the back stretch. A yellow quickly came out for a car that spun out. The next attempt, Scotty fell back and fell into the second spot. Another caution yet again came back out on the track. The third time was the charm and Thiel struggled again to take over the top spot. He fell into the second spot and raced there for several laps. Heavy lap traffic came into play and Scotty managed to pull up to the leader but never had the opportunity to complete the pass. Several laps later, the fueling issues began to take over the engine of the 64 car and he would lose a few positions. A red flag came out on lap 15 which Thiel was sitting in the fourth position after the red came out. With a ten lap dash to the finish, Thiel lost more power and would drop the fifth spot. He held on to that spot for the remaining laps and would cross the line with a top five for the first A-main of the 2013 MSA Season.
“Oh man, I don’t even know where to start to recap the night. We struggled with some fuel problems early and it didn’t get much better as the night went on. We had a great Triple X race car all night long. Jeff set me up great each race. I could drive it anywhere I wanted just needed to get the motor figured out and have some power back. We’ll get it figured out and head to the next one.” Scotty mentioned after the night.
The next stop on the STM schedule will be this coming Friday and Saturday night at the Elko Speedway in Elko, Minnesota for the season opener of the Upper Midwest Sprint Car Series.
