Another night of exciting short track racing took place at Ventura Raceway on Saturday May 11. Once again fans and teams were treated to fast and furious racing on Ventura's new red clay track.
Greg Taylor made it two in a row Saturday night in VRA 360 Sprint Car racing as he took his second main event of 2013. Taylor started fifth and quickly moved to the front of the 18 car field and by lap 9 he was out in front to stay. Following Taylor across the line were Richard Ortega, taking his best ever finish, Tom Hendricks, Bruce Douglass and Luke Boles. Three heat race were run with wins being taken by Greg Taylor in heat one, Charlie Butcher in heat two and Russell DeBlauw in heat three. The night's racing ended with Guy Woodward still out front in the season point race by 60 points over Tom Hendricks.
The new VRA Hobby Stock Class continued to grow with nine cars in attendance. Point leader Scott Dinger took another win in their 20 lap feature. He battled with Gary Curtis for the first ten laps exchanging the lead before Dinger took the lead for the last time on lap 10 and he then went on to take the win with David Heurung, Tom Stephens Jr., Gary Curtis and Joe Humphrey. One heat race was run with the win going to Tom Stephens Jr.
VRA Dwarf Cars raced in two classes, Seniors and Pros. In Pro action, the 20 lap main went to Kevin Calvo over Brian Saxton, Curt Cook, Jason Horton and Tommy Velasquez. This class ran three heats with wins going to Brian Saxton in heat one, Johnny Conely in heat two and Thomas Velasquez in heat three. In the Seniors one heat race was run with the win going to Mike Neal. Their 20 lap main was won by Keith Vondersaar with Mike Neal, Bill VanPraag, Bob Kaufman and George Calvo following him across the finish line.
VRA Mod Lite action saw Ricky Lewis take the 20 lap main event over Dave Dotson, Mike Kornder, Mike Gilmore and Kris Kurisaki. He also took their 8 lap heat race. Dotson leads Lewis by 25 points in the point race.
The final group racing Saturday night was the VRA Sport Compacts. Point leader and 2012 series champ Zack Peterson took another win over Andrew Greiman, Mike Stanford, Heath Morton and Michaela Stanton. Heath Morton took the eight lap heat race.
Ventura Raceway returns to action next weekend May 18 with the second VRA/USAC Midget Battle at the Beach . Also racing that night will be VRA Senior Sprints, VRA Focus Midgets, VRA Dwarf Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Go Karts.
