Dover Doused by Nasty Rut and Mother Nature

Dover Doused by Nasty Rut and Mother Nature

Inside Line Promotions – RISING CITY, Neb. (May 21, 2013) – Jack Dover’s goal of 20 feature wins nearly got a little closer over the weekend. However, a rut and Mother Nature wreaked havoc on his bid for the achievement.

On Friday at U.S. 36 Raceway near Cameron, Mo., for his first Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event of the season, Dover maneuvered from fourth to second on the opening lap of his heat race to earn the runner-up position and enough points to advance to the redraw at the 2nd annual U.S. 36 Nationals Presented by RacinBoys.

A child in the stands pulled the No. 2 for Dover in the redraw, lining him up on the outside of the front row for the 35-lap feature.

“The track was a little narrow in the heats so I knew getting a spot on the front row for the main event was huge,” Dover said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to capitalize.”

As Dover chased polesitter Cole Wood through turns one and two on the second lap around the high-banked track, Dover hit a rut in the middle of turn two. It bounced his car around and nearly flipped it over. While Dover saved the car, the left rear tire went flat and he was forced to pit during the caution.

Dover returned to the track in last place – 22nd – but quickly advanced to 16th before a caution on Lap 5. The final 30 laps were nonstop as Dover maneuvered through the bottom groove to avoid the ruts in the middle of the corners. He finished 11th, which was one spot away from his fourth top 10 of the season.

“That was a frustrating way to end the night, but I’m glad we didn’t flip early in the race,” he said. “The most important thing was that we were able to roll the car back in the trailer at the end of the night.”

Dover and his team headed to Butler County Speedway for a Nebraska 360 Sprints event on Saturday.

After winning the inaugural race with the series a couple of weeks ago, Dover qualified quickest by nearly four-tenths of a second. He then charged from fourth place to first on the opening lap of his 10-lap heat race, which he won to advance to the dash.

Dover finished second in the dash and started the 30-lap feature on the outside of the second row.

He jumped into third place on the first lap and was closing on the first two drivers, who were racing side by side when a red flag was waved on Lap 2. As the drivers waited for the track to be cleared, a heavy storm quickly engulfed the facility and the rest of the event was called.

“We definitely had a car capable of winning again,” Dover said. “I was going to be patient until we got into traffic and that’s where I’m at my best.”

Dover is scheduled to compete in four consecutive events this weekend, beginning on Wednesday at Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour. He will then race Thursday at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour, Friday at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., with the ASCS Midwest Region and Saturday at The Great American Dirt Track at Jetmore Motorplex in Jetmore, Kan., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour for the Steve King Memorial.
