Engine Issues Limit Thiel at Plymouth

Scotty Thiel and the #64 Scott Thiel Motorsports team prepared for the opening night at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wisconsin this past Saturday night after their Friday night race program was yet again cancelled due to rain. Scotty drew a 46 pill to set off the night and would have to chase his way deep through the field.

The heat race event started Thiel in the eighth position. At the drop of the green flag, Scotty got a great start and began to make passes down the front stretch. After coming out of turn two he was already up to the fifth place position and charging hard. A few laps later, Thiel threw a slide job on the third place car and took over the position. Shortly after, on lap seven, Thiel’s car started to lose power and he quickly pulled it into the pits. The crew looked over the car and found two issues; one being a fuel line in the cockpit had collapsed and also the fuel line in the tail tank was sucking in air. Scotty would have to come through the B-main in order to make it into the nights 30 lap A-Main event.

After a few cars dropped out, Scotty started in the fifth place position of the second b-main. The field took the green and Scotty remained on the charge he had in the heat race and took over several positions. A quick caution came out on lap three and would get the field reset. After taking the green again, Scotty made it three wide going into turn one and would take over the top spot using the high side groove. He would set sail for a few laps before another caution came out. Scotty brought the field back to green and would lose the lead with only two laps to go but still made it in the transfer position and would take the 19th starting spot of the nights A-main event.

The crew prepared the car for A-main which Scotty would have to work every way possible in order to move forward after starting deep in the field. The 22 car field took the green flag and would charge for a few laps before a caution took over the track. Scotty had not really moved up any positions at the time but after the field took the green he began to slowly make his way up. The high side for Thiel was working as he kept his momentum up. Just shy of the halfway point of the race, the car began to really hook up for Thiel as he moved up from the 15th spot all the way up to the sixth position. A battle began with only a few short laps with the fifth, six, and seventh place cars. Thiel was using all he could of the car and worked the cushion hard every lap. With only one more lap to go, Scotty crossed the line and began to feel the car loose power and smoke had started to irrupt the cockpit of the car. He quickly pulled it in the pits and shut it down.

“Man I don’t know… we were chasing the entire night. When everything was good, we were great. Things went south a few times and we had to make our way back through it all. I really thought we had it all figured out in the main. Car was really hooked up, my guys gave me a great piece to work with out there. The last lap there, it just started to lose power and it started to smoke real bad. My gauges were all good so I’m not sure what happened. Just is frustrating for our team and I’m bummed for all of my great partners we have to have what was thought to be a good night until the last lap. We’ll get it figured out and focus on next weekend.” – Scotty had mentioned after the disappointing night.

Memorial Day weekend will lead the STM team up to northern Wisconsin to run with the UMSS Sprint Car Series. Friday night’s action takes place at the St. Croix Falls Raceway in St. Croix Falls, WI along with Saturday night at the Rice Lake Speedway in Rice Lake, WI. The team will then travel to 141 Speedway on Sunday evening to race with the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints. Keep up to date on scottythiel.com and our social media pages for updates and results!
