Rilat Claims Gold Cup Opener to Mark Fourth Straight Week with a Victory

Inside Line Promotions - EDMONTON, Alberta, Canada (July 22, 2013) - For the fourth time in as many weeks Travis Rilat made a trip to Victory Lane with Richard Saumure.

Rilat claimed the opening night of the 59th annual Gold Cup at Castrol Raceway on Friday before Saturday's finale was rained out.

"My good friend Tom Lorenz always said a win's a win, no matter how many or who was there," he said. "That keeps the moral up at the 39c team."

Rilat qualified fourth quickest and found the top spot approximately four laps into his eight-lap heat race, which he started sixth. That was the trend on Friday night, when Rilat led all but those first handful of laps during his heat race.

He pulled the No. 3 in the dash draw to start on the inside of the second row, but worked his way into the lead on the opening lap. Rilat won the dash to earn the pole for the 30-lap feature.

"We couldn't get more than three laps in because of reds or cautions," he said. "They wound up shortening the race to 20 laps. I think only 12 cars finished. It got really slick and had a curb around the fence. It was like ice all the way up to the curb."

Rilat, who won the Gold Cup last year driving for Saumure, held on for a sizeable victory - his fourth in the last 10 races.

"Hopefully we can roll all the positive energy into Skagit and walk out with two big checks - one to hang on the wall and one to take to the bank," he said.

Rilat and Saumure will tackle Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., on Friday and Saturday for the Bob's Burger & Brew Summer Nationals, which are the second and third races of the four-race Summer Thunder Series. Rilat was the runner up in the opening race of the Summer Thunder Series on May 11.
