Honoring a Legend: Fred Brownfield’s Enduring Legacy
Over the next two years, Skagit Speedway proudly continues to pay tribute to one of dirt racing’s most influential figures - Fred Brownfield. This tribute began in 2024 with the Northern Speedweek Tour – A Tribute to Fred Brownfield, a journey that stretched from Oregon to the celebrated Bob’s Burgers & Brew Summer Nationals in Burlington, WA - a track that helped shape Fred’s extraordinary career.
In 2025 and 2026, the spotlight returns to Skagit Speedway with one of the richest 360 sprint car races in the country: The Fred Brownfield 360 Summer Nationals, presented by Bob’s Burgers & Brew, offering $26,000 to the winner.
Fred’s connection to Skagit Speedway was deep and transformative. He first hit the dirt there in 1977 and went on to secure four track championships - earning titles in 1977, 1980, 1989, and 1993. Together with his wife Debbie, Fred took ownership of the Speedway in 1994, elevating it to a nationally respected venue through innovation, passion, and persistence.
But Fred's vision extended beyond Skagit. He launched the Northern Sprint Tour, a traveling 360 series that gave drivers across the Pacific Northwest - including Oregon, Washington, Montana, and Canada—a platform to showcase their talent. His boldest endeavor came in 2005 with the formation of the National Sprint Tour. Though his passing in 2006 brought that chapter to a close, Fred’s impact lives on.
Fred believed in racing that thrilled fans and empowered drivers - and that dream continues.
