Chartrand inherits first win after technical inspection
WEST HAVEN, Vermont (August 12, 2025) – Tyler Chartrand capped off the biggest weekend of his racing career with the McGee Automotive Family Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) on Sunday, August 10, at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. The rookie was scored as a first-time winner at Devil’s Bowl, and – aided by a runner-up finish on Saturday at Airborne Park Speedway – clinched the two-race Lacaillade Masonry/LA Transportation Services “Lake Champlain Series” championship.
The Johnsonville, NY driver avoided a pileup in the first corner of the 25-lap A-Main at Devil’s Bowl, which saw Kadyn Berry go flipping wildly and eliminated the cars of Berry, polesitter Caiden Herbert, Kyle Smith, and McGee SCoNE Tour championship leader Matt Tanner; there were no injuries. Will Hull jumped out to the lead when the race restarted, but Chartrand was ahead by lap 4 and held the lead until Bobby Hackel arrived.
Making his first SCoNE appearance since 2018, Hackel worked hard at passing Chartrand for the lead and got the job done cleanly with six circuits left. Hackel then stretched his legs up front and held the lead by a comfortable 3.183-second margin over Chartrand through the finish.
Post-race inspection, however, revealed that the exhaust system on Hackel’s car was not equipped with the required mufflers, and he was penalized to a last-place finish. That ruling let Chartrand inherit his first-ever SCoNE victory and put an exclamation point on his weekend mini-series championship.
The official race finish showed Hull as the runner-up with Matt Hoyt third, Jake Williams fourth, and Floyd Billington fifth. The balance of the top 10, in order, was made up of Mia Koponen, Mark Reynolds, Troy Comeau, Donald Ottati, and Herbert.
