Starks Rebounds for Podium Finish at Willamette Speedway

Inside Line Promotions - LEBANON, Ore. (Aug. 18, 2013) - Forget about good performances, Trey Starks' objective is to win races.

After a last-minute change of plans to head to Willamette Speedway for the ASCS Northwest Region event on Saturday, Starks rebounded from an early mechanical issue to score a third-place finish.

"We had a good car," he said. "We came all the way though the field. It was another good night of racing through traffic. I'm at the point where I want to win. Running through the field and getting podiums isn't necessarily the goal. We've got a couple of wins this season, but we haven't got any in a while. I'm itching for another one."

Starks opened the night with the ASCS Northwest Region changing its format. The region had the drivers qualify and Starks timed in eighth quickest.

"It was one of those ones where you couldn't tell if you should run the top or the bottom," he said. "I tried to go to the bottom the first lap and got caught in the middle and then I ran the top as hard as I could the second lap. Our car was too tight to run the bottom."

The heat races were inverted by six, which started Starks on the inside of the second row in his heat. After getting trapped behind a car on the start, Starks maintained fourth place for the rest of the race.

That put him 10th in points - missing the feature redraw by two positions - and starting on the outside of the fifth row for the 30-lap feature.

"We were trying some stuff with shocks and went back to our basic setup," he said. "It seemed to work a lot better for that track.

"Before our warm-up lap I had fuel dumping out of the fuel canister where the jet is. The o-rings go out on them every so often. It was dumping out on my leg. I've run with one of them leaking before, but this one was just dumping out. I went into the pits and barely got it changed to tag the tail of the feature."

Because he went to the work area, Starks started the race in last place - 16th.

"We picked off a few spots," he said. "I think I was into 11th on Lap 9 when there was a caution. We were picking up a couple of spots by that red flag on Lap 15. We just kept slowing picking our way back through. With two to go we were running fourth and (Seth) Nunes, right in front of us, wore himself out. We barely missed him. It was pretty close."

Starks restarted in third place and held on for the podium finish, which marked his 15th top five of the season.

He is scheduled to compete with the ASCS Northwest Region on Friday at Cottage Grove Speedway in Cottage Grove, Ore., before heading to Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash., on Saturday.
