YORK HAVEN, Pa.: When the wingless Super Sportsman roll into BAPS Motor Speedway, Tony Jackson tops the list of favorites to park his car in Victory Lane.
There are other suitors. The division has become pretty competitive over the last few years, but Jackson has plenty of experience at the York Haven, Pa., facility and knows the subtle tricks to get around the place.
That was evident Saturday night. Jackson got to the front in a hurry and topped the field by a ridiculous 6.9 seconds to capture the 20-Lap main event during the 21st annual York County Nationals presented by Rock-It Pizza.
“Our crew chief and owner (Scott Hess) is away in Texas for work, so for us to get this win says a lot about how good this car is and how much speed we have right now,” Jackson said in a phone interview.
“We were good when we unloaded and made the right adjustments for the feature. This is a great team win, and we are looking forward to the next race.”
Scott Smith jumped out front on the start and led the first circuit. Brandon Shearer, who started on the outside pole, took over on Lap 2 and led the next three times around before Jackson flexed at the front of the field.
Jackson, who started seventh on the grid, shot into the lead and drove away. The non-stop affair turned into a benefit race for the Carlisle driver, as he took the win by 6.921 seconds at the stripe.
Shearer finished second, with eighth-place starter Steve Wilbur completing the podium. Billy Brian Jr. and Dexter Ehrenzeller completed the top five.
In 358 Late Model competition, Chad Smith took control of the main event at the outset and led all 20 laps to score his first win of the season at the speedway.
There were two cautions over the race distance, which gave fourth-place starter Jed Latshaw a shot at the leader. Smith was up to the task and was able to claim the win by 1.680 seconds over the field.
Latshaw finished second, followed by Travis Horan and Scott Palmer. Wayne Pfeil completed the top five in the main event.
The PA Micros were also on the card, with Josh Forry grabbing the lead at the halfway point and scoring a narrow victory.
Forry started fifth and took the lead when leader Matt Kiefert rolled to a stop on the backstretch. Once out front, Forry had to fend off Todd Walls over the closing stages of the event to take the checker by a mere .230 seconds.
Walls settled for second. Bobby Geiman, Mason Noble, and Ryan Rost completed the top five in the Micro Midget 500 Series event.
The most dominant performance of the night was orchestrated by Matt Worley in the Pro 4 Series event. By the time the 25-Lap onslaught was complete, he had a 7.735-second lead over the field.
Vinny Wollyung led the first two laps before Worley, who started eighth, blew by and decimated the field. Tyler Denike, Matt Chronister, Julian Storms, and Tyler Kline completed the top five.
Asher Paxton captured the 15-Lap PA Micro Midget 300 main event, and Steve Cantwell Jr. topped the field in Classic Car action.
