The hype for the A-Verdi Storage Containers CRSA Sprints continues to grow.
CRSA prepares to return to Brewerton Speedway Friday for round five of the I-90 Pit Stop Challenge.
All eyes continue to look on Dillon Paddock and Zach Sobotka, the two vying for their first title, with three points-paying races left before the series goes into three-showup-point events.
This is the second time the series has visited “The D-Shaped Dirt Demon.” Last year, Jeff Trombley scored his 14th career victory, then a record-tying win in the all-time wins list.
Here’s a look at the stories for Friday.
Last Time Out: CRSA made its return to Albany-Saratoga Speedway for an I-90 Pit Stop Challenge event.
The race was a tale of two halves for different drivers in the top two spots. Billy VanInwegen and Chad Miller were the dominant two.
Following a yellow at the halfway mark, Zach Sobotka had a chance to crack the top two and looked like we would have a new points leader, but not until Dillon Paddock had other plans.
Restarting eighth with 12 to go, Paddock went around the top where nobody else went to move up to second. Immediately after, threaded the needle on VanInwegen and Sobotka to go three wide and take the lead.
Sobotka would look inside with a couple of slide jobs, but in the end, Paddock would score win three of the year.
“I went to the top one time and drove through and went off the backstretch,” said Paddock. “If I ripped the top, where no one could enter as high as I could. Drove it as hard as I could. That was win or lose and had to get back into it.”
Sobotka was second while Jeff Trombley finished third.
With the win, Paddock continues his streak of seven straight podiums.
Mano y Mano: Paddock and Sobotka have each won the last two races, giving them three wins apiece. With Paddock besting Sobotka, “The Show Stopper” extended his lead to a slim four points on the No. 38 with three races of full points shows remaining.
Going into Brewerton, based on experience, the advantage is on Sobotka's end. Formerly a track champion in the Sportsman division, Sobotka ran a PJC Motorsports sprint car last year and finished third, his first podium in CRSA competition. A win could increase the possibility of regaining the points lead.
Paddock ran Brewerton last year and climbed 14 spots from 24th after running in the B-Main to finish 10th, receiving the Powdertech Powdercoating Hard Charger award that night.
Rest of Standings: Despite a spin last week in Malta, Jordan Hutton remains third, 148 points back.
Even with a 16th-place finish last week, Dalton Herrick is fourth in points, 174 back.
Timmy Lotz and Scott Landers are tied for fifth in points, 193 points behind.
Alysha Bay is seventh, 20 points ahead of Spencer Burley, 1881 to 1861.
The rest of the top 12 have Darryl Ruggles in ninth, 293 points behind Paddock, Vince Chicklets in 10th, 372 back, Bailey Boyd in 11th, 404 points behind the leader and Steve Glover in 12th, 494 points behind.
I-90 Pit Stop Challenge: Just like in the overall race, the top two in the standings have pulled away from the rest of the field in the I-90 Challenge. Only this time, Zach Sobotka is out in front.
Sobotka has a 10-point advantage on Paddock with two wins on the season at Utica-Rome and Fulton. Should anyone in the top two have issues during the feature, this could allow Dalton Herrick, Scott Landers and Alysha Bay, who are in a tight battle for third, to pounce.
NY 305 Nationals News: Registration is open for the New York 305 Nationals presented by Dandy.
Registration costs $100. Those who enter by Aug. 31 will receive a complimentary two-day pit pass.
The Nationals consists of a two-night format where the first night includes a pair of twin 20-lap features in which winners are locked into the show. The second night features time trials to set the heat lineups, dash for the front spots, and a 30-lap feature in which the winner gets $4000 to win in a nearly $18000 purse.
In addition, the New York State Stock Car Association has stepped up to award an extra $50 to each of the highest finishing NYSSCA members in each race Friday night, then offer $100, $75 and $50 to the two highest finishing members and a wild card member in Saturday night's feature. Representatives will be there both nights for anyone looking to become a member.
Loyalty Giveaways: Our fourth giveaway of the season is Friday. Drivers who entered the races at Weedsport and the race at Fulton will be eligible to win the Triple X chassis. The package has an estimated value of $4500. 21 drivers are eligible for the chassis giveaway.
It is one of five giveaways we are awarding this season. The drawing will be done remotely via wheel spin on an app..
Spencer Burley won the first giveaway, a Sweet Manufacturing steering package. Darryl Ruggles won the second giveaway, a Saldana and Kinsler fuel system. Dillon Paddock won the third giveaway, an FK Shock and Smith Ti brake kit. They will be ineligible to win giveaways the rest of the year.
By the Numbers: Last year's car count saw 34 sprint cars check in, but in the end, it was the No. 3A of Jeff Trombley that ended on top. A majority of the drivers who finished in the top five spots had experience at the track in the past.
From the Frontman: “We’re coming off some exciting races for CRSA, especially the last race at Albany-Saratoga. Brewerton has had some great shows the last few weeks and is hoping for another good one. Looking forward to bringing our field of 305 Sprints back!”
Up Next: CRSA takes Labor Day weekend off but returns Sept. 5 and 6 at Ransomville and Weedsport to see which of the top two will get a huge advantage in points. Sept. 5 will be seen on Dirt Track Digest TV, while Weedsport will be live on DIRTVision.
