Friday Night at I-96 Speedway brought Winged 360 Sprints and Non-Winged 410 Sprints for round 2 of Battle of the Sprints. When Sprints are in town, the stands are packed and the action is Non-Stop.
The Great Lakes Super Sprint Feature was a tale of two different emotions from a few of the perennial contenders. “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel would lead early but be hit with disappointment. Chase Dunham and Chase Ridenour brought out a red flag for a front stretch flip, and Thiel would pull to the hot pit from the number 1 spot because he couldn't get the car in gear. That would give the lead to #85 Dustin Daggett. Daggett looked like he was well on his way to victory until a late pass with two to go by Jared “Hurricane” Horstman would set disappointment up for the 85 team. 1st-#17 Jared “Hurricane” Horstman 2nd-#85 “Double D” Dustin Daggett 3rd-#51 “Big Wheel” Scotty Thiel 4th-#16 Ryan Ruhl 5th-#X Mike Keegan. Heat race winners were Thiel, #71 “Mad” Max Stambaugh and Daggett. Fast time was a 14.025 by Thiel.
Great Lakes Traditional Sprints Feature had comers and goers the entire race with action all through the field. Started out looking like the 49 team of Brian Ruhlman would be the victor until front-runner, Steve Irwin, got around the 49. Irwin would take the lead on lap 5 and never look back to park it in the Lane Automotive/Allstar Performance Victory Lane. Heats were won by Irwin, Ruhlman, and #10S Jay Steinebach. Fast time was a 16.421 by Irwin.
The HUBBCO Racing Product IMCA Modified Feature would be mired by caution flags. A usual crowd pleaser every Friday, the Mods were a bit unusual with caution after caution causing some very good cars, and potential winners, to hang it up for the night. One of those drivers that are typically in the hunt for the win, Shannon Fisk, would win the battle of attrition after leading twice to go on to win the A Main. It wouldn't all be easy for Fisk as he would lose the lead for a few laps to the “Portland Powerhouse” Casey Smith who would eventually settle for 2nd. 1st-#43 Shannon Fisk 2nd-#83 “Portland Powerhouse” Casey Smith 3rd-#05 Ryan Heskett 4th-#19jr Kody Johnson 5th-#10 Gary Vandermark. Heats were won by Heskett and #12 “The Real Deal” Jeff Reay.
In the Street Stock division, we have had a tight point battle all season between point leader, Carlind Forsythe, and 2nd place, Bill Brandt Jr. Last week, we wrote about Brandt getting the upper hand by sweeping the night and this week was a complete change of fortune as Forsythe would sweep the night. Heavy challenges from Brandt in both, but it would be all Forsythe when the dust settled. 1st-#67 Carlind Forsythe 2nd-#65 Bill Brandt Jr. 3rd-#70 Britany Devries 4th-#2 Hunter Evans 5th-#27 Peyton Cunningham. Again, heat race winner was Forsythe.
The compact class was there to put on a show Friday and not just feel like a support class for the featured division and they did just that with high flying, non-stop racing action all the way through the field with alot of passing and surprises. Heavy hitters having mechanical issues, and unexpected issues for track regular would make you believe it would be too hard to predict the winner, until you see the blazing fast Roy Moses take the lead on lap 2. He would get challenged the entire race by point leader, Jordan Siegel, but Moses was too strong to beat. 1st-#44 Roy Moses 2nd-#14 “Muskegon Missile” Jordan Siegel 3rd-#22 Drew Phillips 4th-#49 Austin Terryn 5th-#72 Alex Ruiter. Moses also picked up the heat win.
