Macri Holds Off Ryan Smith for the win

YORK HAVEN, Pa.: It looked like the same old BAPS Motor Speedway for Anthony Macri on a nippy Saturday afternoon. Something was off.

Before his July World of Outlaws victory, Macri had some struggles at the York Haven facility. It wasn’t a lack of speed as much as just being off and finishing somewhere between third and sixth.

Macri during the afternoon event, but he fell back to third after starting on the outside of the front row in the 30-Lap main event. If not for another caution, he might have been fourth by Lap 10.

But the car came around, and the Dillsburg, Pa., surged to the front. It culminated with a Lap 18 pass on Kyle Moody that put him out front, and he held off Ryan Smith late to capture the EK Services Britton Finkenbinder Memorial.

“We struggled there in the beginning and weren’t entirely good when the car came to me,” said Macri after his 16th win of the season. “During the red, we changed some stuff, and we got way better. I could run the curb and get off the corner, and with Brent [Marks] and the 69K behind me, I knew I needed to keep my pace up.

“It’s hard to pick your pace up on a curb that big, and I didn’t want to trip on it. I kind of fumbled on the curb in four with a few to go and thought that was going to be an opportunity for someone, but luckily, that didn’t happen.”

Moody got the jump on Macri at the start and led the first two circuits. The pace was slowed on Lap 3 when Chris Frank spun on the frontstretch. It was the first of many cautions over the race distance.

Tyler Ross took advantage of the restart and was able to get past Macri for the runner-up spot in Turns 1 and 2. Ross closed on the leader, taking the lead on Lap. 12, only to have the caution displayed for Chase Dietz, who spun in Turn 2.

After Dylan Norris got upside down on the restart, Macri pulled a slider on Ross for second. Ross’ race came to an end when he slowed coming off the fourth corner.

It didn’t take long for Macri to challenge for the top spot. Another caution slowed the pace on Lap 17, which gave Macri a clear shot to slide Moody for the lead one lap later in Turns 1 and 2. Moody came back on him, but Macri was able to duck to the bottom off of Turn 4 to lead the 18th circuit.

With cautions piling up, a fuel stop was necessary. Brent Marks got by Moody, as did Ryan Smith on the restart. The pace was slowed for the final time on Lap 24, when Danny Dietrich lost a wheel going down the backstretch.

Macri opened up a half-second lead on the restart. Smith tip-toed past Marks for second and was able to show his nose to the leader in the corners, but Macri had just enough to claim the victory by .477 seconds at the stripe.

“Not everyone can say they got a crown jewel out of PA,” Macri said. “Obviously, that was the biggest achievement and the most special, but we have a lot of wins. It takes a good team to do that.

“Thank you to my parents, sponsors, and crew guys. A lot of work goes into this, and I can’t thank Charlie Garrett and Don Ott and Adam [Cofer]. Obviously, you can’t win these races without a badass motor, and they produce good ones. Hopefully, we can get a couple more wins the rest of the year.”

Ryan Smith finished second, with High Limit regular Brent Marks settling for third. Troy Wagaman Jr. and Brock Zearfoss completed the top five.

In the Racing for Outreach Wingless Super Sportsman main event, Brett Perigo led the entire 40-Lap distance, but it was far from easy.

Perigo started second on the grid and beat pole-sitter Brandon Shearer through the first two corners to lead the way. Tony Jackson started fourth but fell back to fifth on the second circuit before heading to the front.

Jackson was up to third on Lap 9 and was second two laps later. The Carlisle driver chased down Perigo and had multiple shots at the win over the final 29 laps but couldn’t get by Perigo.

When the checkered flew, Perigo claimed the win by a mere .108 seconds. Steve Wilburg, who started 10th, was also in the mix, finishing a close third. Shearer and Dexter Ehrenzeller completed the top five.
