Felker Endures Roller-Coaster Weekend at 29th annual Tulsa Shootout

Inside Line Promotions – TULSA, Okla. (Jan. 7, 2014) – Last weekend was certainly up and down for Andrew Felker at the 29th annual Speedway Motors Tulsa Shootout.

Piloting a micro sprint for Hans Lein, Felker failed to find much luck in the nonwing outlaw and winged outlaw competition at Tulsa Expo Raceway.

“The place always takes some luck and it didn’t seem like we had any of it,” he said. “We had one of the better cars there and couldn’t catch a break.”

Felker opened the event last Wednesday by advancing from seventh to fourth place during his nonwing outlaw heat race. However, a late bid to pick up the third position relegated Felker to a fifth-place result.

“We got up to fourth going to the white flag,” he said. “I was trying to make the top work when there wasn’t much there. I fell to fifth trying to go for third place.”

That started Felker on the outside of the fifth row of a B Main on Friday, when only the top two cars transferred.

“It was a slimy mess to start the B Main for a 10-lap race,” he said. “I rolled the bottom just waiting for people to make mistakes. Then the last two laps I tried to make the top happen to get a transfer. We were by far the quickest car on the track in that B Main. We just didn’t have enough time.”

Felker ended with a third-place result to miss earning a transfer by only one position.

On Thursday, he got off to a better start in the winged outlaw class as Felker claimed his heat race after starting on the pole.

“I held off Mitchell Faccinto, who the last couple of years has been tough to beat there,” he said.

Felker then advanced from fifth to third place on the opening lap of his qualifier on Friday and he made a late pass to secure the runner-up position, which put him eighth in overall points to lock into Saturday’s main event.

After battling inside the top 10 for the first handful of laps during the feature, a caution came out. When the race resumed, Felker was forced to pull into the infield on the restart lap with a mechanical issue and he was credited with a 24th-place result.

“The motor shut off,” he said. “When we cleaned the injection that morning we forgot to completely tighten it and it fell off.”

While the Tulsa Shootout results ended up disappointing, Felker is excited to return to Tulsa Expo Raceway next week for the 28th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire. Felker advanced into the A Main for the first time in his career last season at the premier midget event, which garners approximately 300 competitors every season.
