Brian Brown – Back to “The Good Life”!

(Bill W) June 29, 2009 – Brian Brown will be heading back to Nebraska with the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 team on Thursday and Friday. He has had much success at those tracks. He will also go for his third straight weekly win at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday. Last week, he drove to a 13th place finish with the World of Outlaws, and ran well in a pair of events in Illinois.

Morgan County Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois set the stage for Friday’s racing. “When I saw it was the Leon Smith Memorial at Jacksonville, I wanted to participate in it,” says the Grain Valley, Missouri driver. “I drove for Leon a few times back in 2001 and 2002, and he was a good guy. It was also a 410 show that paid $3,500 to win, so you always want to make those.”

After registering the second quick time of the night, Brian finished second in the heat after starting fourth. “Jim Moughan was able to beat us by a quarter of a car length in the heat, and that made a difference of a row and a half for feature starting position,” he adds.

Things started slow for Brian, and he advanced to contention before suffering a flat in the end. “We slipped back to eighth or ninth at one point,” he explains. “We were charging back through and up to third. I thought we’d have a chance to win the deal, but we ended up cutting a right rear tire on the turn four wall with about seven or eight laps to go.”

The WoO was in Knoxville on Saturday night. With the top 16 in time trials eligible for the all important heat inverts, Brian timed one spot out in 17th. In fact, he missed by one thousandth of a second. “It is frustrating in a sense, but exciting in another,” he says. “We were the fastest car in hot laps in our session. I got too low on my qualifying lap and got into the water. Having done that and still being that close to the invert…that’s a very good sign for us with the Nationals coming up in August.”

Instead of a shot at starting up front, Brian drove from 16th to 13th in the 25-lap main event. “We weren’t too bad,” he says of the run on a heavy track. “The track was wide open, and we still managed to pass a few cars. When you are passing Joey Saldana and racing side by side with Danny Lasoski back there, you can’t be too far off the pace.”

A new venue awaited Brian on Sunday. The Shepp’s Speedway in Alexander, Illinois ran a $2,000 to win 410 race. “I felt like we were snookered there a bit,” he says. “We didn’t know about the draw in time, so they put us to the back of qualifying. It slicked off quite a bit, and we timed sixth. Everything lined up according to time, so that hurt us. We started fifth in the heat, and we were challenging AJ Bruns for second. We got together a bit, and dropped back to fourth.”

That put Brian back in row four for the feature event. He would finish in the show position. “We worked up to third, and that’s as far as we would go,” he says. “Shepp’s is a new track. It is on the narrow side, but it has a lot of potential.”

This weekend, the SuperClean #21 team will hit a pair of ASCS-Midwest shows. On Thursday, the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, Nebraska will be on tap. On Friday, the troupe heads down Interstate 80 to McCool Junction and the Junction Motor Speedway. “We’re going to be testing and tuning some things with Engler Injection for the 360 Nationals, and Thursday and Friday will be a good opportunity to do that,” says Brian.

The weekend of racing will conclude on Saturday at the Knoxville Raceway.

Brian's Q&A
Donna Shelton from Grand Island, NE asks: You’ve done well at the two Nebraska tracks you are racing at this weekend. Can you explain what you like about each one?

Brian answers: We’ve had a lot of success at I-80 and at McCool Junction. They race differently, but they both fit my style. They usually get dry and have multiple grooves, and that’s what I like. Anytime we can go up there and get some of Billy Alley’s money, that’s what we try to do.
