Bright Almost Wins Second Straight, Also Makes Return to Pavement Racing

Inside Line Promotions – WATERFORD, Conn. (May 11, 2014) – Alex Bright nearly captured his second straight victory with another late-race pass last Friday.

Unfortunately, as Bright exited turn four coming to the checkered flag with the lead the yellow flag was waved during the wingless micro sprint main event at Linda’s Speedway in Jonestown, Pa.

Bright was then sent to the back of the pack for the restart with one lap remaining because officials deemed he made contact with another driver to cause the caution.

“They threw the white flag and I went to go under the leader,” he said. “I left him enough room to run the top side. I didn’t want to pinch him. I don’t know if he started to spin or if he came down. His left front tire hit my right rear. I don’t even want to say hit. That was the definition of rubbing and he spun after the fact.”

After being penalized, Bright picked up a handful of positions on the last-lap restart to place 10th.

“We made a race-winning move and the officials made a call that we don’t agree with,” he said.

It spoiled a night when Bright was the driver on the move. He advanced from third to second place in his heat race. After starting eighth in the main event, Bright methodically worked toward the front.

“The track was really slick,” he said. “There was no cushion. It was just tacky at the top side. When I got a good run I went for it.”

Following the frustrating result, Bright made his return to pavement racing on Saturday at Waterford Speedbowl in a winged midget. It marked his first time competing on pavement in four years.

“I went out for practice just trying to get a feel on the car,” he said. “I know from my quarter midget days that smooth in and smooth out is the way to do it.”

Bright rallied from eighth to a fifth-place result in his heat race, which started him on the inside of the seventh row for the 25-lap main event.

As he maneuvered toward the top five, Bright’s race car began to slow in the final 10 laps. The team later found that the alternator went bad.

“The last 10 laps the engine didn’t have nearly as much power as it did in the first part,” he said. “I think I would have ended up fourth or fifth.”

Bright held on for a seventh-place finish.

He is scheduled to compete in a micro sprint this Wednesday at Action Track USA in Kutztown, Pa., and in a midget on Saturday at New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt, N.J.
