Jeff Babcock Wins Fricke Thunderstock Select

[i (Lima, OH)]

Limaland Motorsports Park’s three weekly divisions took to the track in front of the second largest crowd of the season when Limaland welcomed St. Rita’s Hospital and Robinson Heating and Cooling employees. As usual, the racing was extremely competitive and dramatic last lap passes were the norm during the heat races and features.

It was a special night for the Bud Thunderstocks, who not only ran their feature event, but also participated in the Fricke Memorial Thunderstock Select. The feature race had Jeff Koz and Tony Anderson on the front row for the 15-lap feature. For the first seven laps, Koz showed he has what it takes to challenge for wins on a weekly basis as he repeatedly held off Anderson’s attempts to take the lead. In the mean time, Jeff Babcock was slowly but surely picking his way to the front after starting eighth. A caution for Pete Zuppardo, with three laps to go, set up the typical Limaland shoot-out for the win. Babcock made quick work of Koz and claimed another feature win in the Bud Thunderstock class.

The second feature of the evening was the Elwer Fence 360 sprints. The 25-lap feature was led to the green flag by the front row of Bob Gehr Jr. and Jeff Williams. Once the green flag waved, Jared “Hurricane” Horstman jumped to the high side and laid claim to the lead. Horstman stretched his lead lap after lap until a pair of spins by Sheldon Haudenschild slowed the pace. Rob Chaney and JR Stewart put on the best show of the night as they swapped second place over and over, weaving in and out of traffic and dive-bombing the legendary high banks of Limaland Motorsports Park.

Chaney eventually seized control of second place and took off after Horstman, whose pace had been hampered, once again by lap traffic. Chaney pulled off a classic slide job on Horstman in turns three and four with two laps to go. As the cars came around for the white flag, Bob Gehr Jr. spun in turn three and JR Stewart had nowhere to go and made contact with Gehr Jr. Horstman could not make a run at Chaney during the one lap dash for the win and Stewart took a big hit in the 2009 championship points chase, after going from second place to 15th as a result of his contact in the last laps of the race. Rob Chaney picked up his second win of the season and Horstman continued to show his inevitable first win is soon to come!

Jeff Babcock and Todd Sherman have dominated the Professional Computer Company Modified division. Babcock started the evening with the points lead but Todd Sherman was determined to make up ground. Sherman used his front row starting spot to jump to the lead and establish himself as the driver with mid-season momentum and the best shot at winning the feature. While Sherman and Brian Post dueled for the win, the wily veteran, Terry Hull was stalking. On the 19th lap, just as Hull passed Sherman for the lead, a yellow came out for debris on the front stretch. Hull would restart in second. Winless in 2009, Hull was determined to be the first back to the finish line and gain his entry into the King of the Quarter Mile. Sherman left just enough room on his outside coming out of turn four and Hull willed his way to the win and ended his winless streak at Limaland.

The last event of the evening was the Fricke Thunderstock Select. Jeff Babcock, by virtue of the invert, started on the outside of the front row and bolted to the lead. Babcock was unchallenged and the race was caution free. Tony Anderson finished second after starting sixth and Jeff Koz made his way to fourth.

This Friday, Limaland Motorsports Park will hold the Bobby Keysor Memorial. In action will be the Elwer Fence Sprints, Professional Computer Company Modifieds and Bud Thunderstocks. A special “Meet the Drivers Night” autograph session will be held before the racing program begins. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with hot laps beginning at 6:30 p.m. Racing begins promptly at 7:30 p.m.
