A three race weekend resulted in two podium finishes for Grain Valley, Missouri sprint car driver Brian Brown. After a DNF forced them out of competition at hometown Valley Speedway on Friday, the Brian Brown Racing SuperClean #21 traveled to Nebraska and came away with a pair of top three finishes against some stiff competition. It only gets tougher Wednesday night, when Brian returns to the Clay County Fair Speedway to compete with the World of Outlaws.
The event at the Valley Speedway saw the Winged Outlaw Warriors competing. “It’s always nice to run this race, because it’s close to home,” says Brian. “We were able to win the heat race (starting third), and we drew five out of six to start the feature.”
Lining up fifth for the feature, Brian advanced before brake problems sidelined him. “We got up to third there, and kind of rode behind (Josh) Fisher and (Jesse) Hockett,” he says. “It kind of took us awhile to get going with all the cautions. We lost our brakes there, and the way the track conditions were, we pulled off to race another day. The groove was right up on the edge, and slide jobs were flying everywhere. That’s not the ideal position to be in without brakes.”
With 54 cars assembled at Eagle Raceway’s Nebraska Cup on Saturday night, Brian knew his work was cut out for him. A tough heat proved it. “I thought it was the toughest heat of the night,” he says. “Austen Wheatley was up front, Jack Dover was in front of us, and Tony Bruce was beside us. We had a great start and had the lead by turn two. We led the whole way until Tony snuck under us in the last corner. We still qualified for the redraw, but you don’t want to get beat at anything.”
Brian’s luck escaped him when he redrew the final spot outside row four for the feature. With plenty of firepower in front of him, he steadily moved forward to finish third behind Bruce and Hockett in a wild event. “Again, it took us awhile to get going,” he shares. “Once we did, we were trying to catch Tony and Jesse. We needed a caution. I thought we were good enough for second if we had one more lap, but I don’t know if we could have gotten Tony. The place was packed. The track was in great shape. To come away with a top three with 54 cars there was a good thing.”
The final ASCS-Midwest event of the season took place Sunday night at the Butler County Speedway west of Rising City, Nebraska. Brian again qualified for the feature redraw after a second place heat finish. “We were able to run second to Brady Bacon in the heat,” he says. “For once, we got lucky on the redraw and drew a one. The track was a little different. It was sticky in the corners, and ice slick on the straightaways.”
Chad Humston started outside row one and led the way to victory, while Brian battled to keep second. “I got the lead on the first green, but Chad got it on the second,” he says. “I actually fell back to third at one time, and thought I might lose that spot. We got into a slidejob fest with Mike Boston, which was a good time. We were able to nail down second, and that was good.”
All in all, it was a successful weekend. “If the brakes wouldn’t have gone out, we would have had three top threes, and once you have those going, the wins will follow,” says Brian. “We have to pick up the pace a little; we have a lot of big races coming up.”
The first big race comes Wednesday night at the Clay County Fair Speedway where Brian finished fifth with the World of Outlaws a year ago. Other racing options this weekend are being weighed that include shows in Missouri, Iowa and Minnesota.

Kris McCombs asks: You did well at the Clay County Fair last year (5th) with the World of Outlaws. What do you think of the track, and does it remind you of any others?
Brian answers: It really doesn’t remind me of many other tracks. The corners are pretty tight with longer straights. We definitely had a good time there last year. We didn’t really know what was going on with our team at the time, and I was new to ownership. It worked out really well, despite not having any brakes at the end. We’re excited to get back up there.

Brian has four top fives in World of Outlaws competition. He has scored two fourth place finishes, one in the Lonnie Parsons #6 at the Hollywood Hills Speedway near Albuquerque in 2003, and the other last May at the Knoxville Raceway. Two fifth place finishes came in 2006 at Volusia (FL) Speedway Park and last year at the Clay County Fair Speedway in Spencer, IA.
