Inside Line Promotions – MARION, Ark. (Jan. 11, 2016) – Derek Hagar will make his long-awaited return to the premier midget event this week.
Hagar is set to drive for Phil and Luke McGee at the 30th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals Presented by General Tire at Tulsa Expo Raceway in Tulsa, Okla., for the third time in his career and first since 2009. Hagar will practice on Monday, race preliminary action on Wednesday and take part in Saturday’s finale.
“I’m anxious to get back in a midget with the years of experience I’ve got under my belt,” he said. “Last time I drove a midget I was still green in racing and still in the learning curve. I’m excited to go to the Chili Bowl and see what we can do now.”
While Hagar hasn’t piloted a midget in approximately seven years, he has lofty goals during his debut with the McGee’s.
“My goal is to make the A Main Wednesday night and Saturday night,” he said. “We have to go there with high expectations, but also an open mind. This team has never been to the Chili Bowl and it’s been a while since I have. We have a good car, good equipment and good people around us. As long as we keep a good mindset and make every lap count I don’t see why we shouldn’t have a good showing.”
Hagar is coming off a 12-win season, including three nonwing sprint car victories.
