Inside Line Promotions – COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 10, 2016) – Kevin Mingus is making strides in figuring out how to drive a sprint car on dirt.

Mingus began his racing career on asphalt, but he is now driving a 305ci sprint car on dirt along with a late model on pavement this season.

The rain finally stayed away last weekend, allowing Mingus and the Huber Racing sprint car team to travel to Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where 35 sprint cars signed in to compete on Friday.

“We have seen about every category of track conditions at Attica from slick to tacky,” Mingus said. “The track was very tacky Friday and it took some getting used to. We started third in our heat and finished eighth. I had some troubles getting off the turns … the track was a little rutty.

“I watched the track when the other divisions were out there and made some mental notes. We started seventh in one of the B Mains and dropped back, but we got going and finished seventh and I made my first official pass on dirt. I know the results don’t show it, but overall we made some improvements. I’m starting to understand throttle control. We have to take baby steps.”

Mingus switched gears on Saturday and headed to Columbus Motor Speedway for a late model race on pavement.

His team utilized older tires while most of the teams had fresh rubber on their cars. Mingus qualified 15th out of 18 cars. That lined him up second in his heat, which he led for a while before the car got loose and he finished second.

“We’re trying to get off sequence on the tire deal from the other teams,” he said. “It hurt us in qualifying, but it will pay off later in the year as we try to win a championship.”

Mingus started 15th in the feature event.

“After the past few weeks of getting involved in incidents and banging the car up our main goal Saturday was to bring it home on the lead lap and in one piece,” he said. “There were two wrecks in front of us and I was able to avoid them. We got some luck and cautions. I found my rhythm and started rolling the high line and picking off cars. We got our best feature finish of the season in eighth behind the wheel of the BOR 54.

“All and all I’m really happy with how the entire weekend went. I’m feeling very comfortable in these cars. I needed this weekend. I’d like to thank Big Mac, Donnie and Tyler for all of the wrenching they did to get this thing tuned in, and also to Midwest Equipment Company Crane Rental for their loyal support with this asphalt program in 2016.”

Mingus will return to action Saturday at Columbus Motor Speedway with the NASCAR Whelen All American Late Model Series.
