Caney, Kansas (June 18, 2016) - Johnny Kent was in the right place at the right time and took full advantage to win his first Ameri-Flex / OCRS main event of the season Saturday night at Caney Valley Speedway.
Starting from the outside front row, Kent fell in behind pole sitter Alex DeCamp when the green flag dropped and gave chase for 13 laps. When DeCamp clipped an infield tire trying to pass a lapped car, Kent was able to roar past and into the lead.
“The car was rolling pretty good but we were probably going to run second to (Alex) DeCamp before he hit the infield tire,” Kent said of his move into the lead. “
But the lead was short lived. Robert Sellers, who also drove past DeCamp, shot past Kent on lap 15 and into the lead.
However losing the lead to Sellers was a blessing in disguise.
“I was fortunate enough to get out front then Sellers got around me and forced me down the race track a little bit,” Kent said. “He found some rubber in (turns) one and two that I was unaware of when he got around me. He forced me down there to find it.
“I just happened to stumble on to a little bit a rubber that I found before he did in the middle of (turns) three and four.”
Those results gave Kent new life. Kent challenged Sellers and took the lead back for good on lap 18. The final 12 laps belonged to Kent who picked up his first victory since 2015. DeCamp recovered from his mishap to pass Sellers for second on lap 18 leaving Sellers with third. Alex Sewell and series points leader Zach Chappell were fourth and fifth.
