Matt Covington Knoxville Raceway 7/11/09 Re-cap

The Covington Motorsports team made a trip back to Knoxville Raceway after electing to stay home instead of following the ASCS National tour up north. Matt was needing and hoping for a good run after pulling off a win earlier in the year at Knoxville. With it being twin feature night for the 410 sprinters, it was oblivious before the night was up the track would be extremely dry slick. Matt would have his work cut out for him after drawing 47 out of 50 in the pill draw. He would have to start the heat race inside row five in the 9th position. Matt focused hard after hot laps getting the car comfortable for the heat. After starting 9th in the heat Matt was hard on the gas and was able to drive up the 4th, gaining many passing points. This would start Matt outside row four in the feature. Starting 8th Matt made the best of the dry slick track working the high side. With a handful of laps in the books Matt was 5th passing for 4th when a yellow would come out for a spin in turns 3 and 4. With everybody being in the high grove and up on the fence, Matt would try the bottom side on the restart. Matt was hoping everybody would go to the top and bunch up and he could gain some easy spots rolling the bottom. This unfortunately would not be the case and Matt would slide sideways across the track and fall back to tenth while gathering the car back up. With the laps winding down, Matt was able to run the lead pack back down and pass a car to come home 9th. With a fast race car there was hopes of a better finish, but all in all it was a very successful night and a much needed test and tune before the Knoxville 360 Nationals.

This solid top-ten run is what was needed for the Covington Motorsports team. Hopefully the team will be able to carry the momentum into the next race at State Fair Speedway in Oklahoma City. Matt is sitting 2nd in ASCS Sooner points and hopes to be able to take over the point lead after races at Oklahoma City and Lawton.Stay in tune with Matt through the team website, www.mattcovington95.com and a very special thanks goes out to T&L Foundry, C.G.
