26 Promotions – Albuquerque, NM – (April 12th, 2017) – Spencer Hill is ready to move on from a roller coaster 2016 season that saw him start the year running a Non-Wing 360 Sprint Car to being out of a ride and running the family owned Micro Sprint. Hill landed a ride in a 305 Wing Sprint late in the season and is now ready to focus on the 2017 Lucas Oil POWRi WAR 305 Wing Sprint season in New Mexico.
“Last year my intention was to run the 360 full time for SEH Motorsports,” explained Hill. “We were going to run quite a few races in Arizona with USAC and do the Las Cruces and El Paso races as well.”
Those plans changed after the first night out when Hill was involved in a flip at Canyon Speedway Park.
“That put us in a tight bind financially on both the team and driver side,” he said. “That, along with a few other things, led to us parting ways about halfway through the year. We’re still great friends with Truman and his family, and we will continue to carry the SEH Motorsports name on our car as a tertiary sponsor for the 2017 season.”
Hill thought the exit from SEH would be the end of his Sprint Car season, but soon after being released, he got a call from Bobby Seals.
“He basically sat us down and told me that he is buying a car and would like for me to be the driver,” said Hill. “Bobby and his wife have been great to me and have been super supportive in my career.”
Seals and Hill decided to finish out the season running the last few 305 races in New Mexico to get ready for the 2017 season.
“The wing races last season went well, honestly, it’s a really big change to go from Non-Wing 360 to Winged 305,” he explained. “To do that change with a totally different team midway through the season escalated the learning curve for me. We had minor issues but really showed that we could be a contender in the Lucas Oil Series. Now, having a full off-season to prepare, and staying consistent with the same team, I believe that this will be one of the best seasons for myself and SHR.”
With the limited experience last year, Hill isn’t too worried about the transition from Non-Wing to Wing.
“In some respects, I think both suit me pretty well. I’m known in New Mexico as a ‘wing driver’ but really, I feel like I have found more success in my Non-Wing ventures,” said Hill. “I prefer winged racing though because I feel like there is just a type of energy that is found in those races that I really enjoy. You have to know how to use the air to your advantage and make very calculated moves through traffic. I like having that mindset through my races because I consider myself a very calculated driver.”
In addition to the seventeen 305 Wing Sprint races, Hill also plans on making at least nine starts in the 4s Micro Sprint. His first appearance in the Micro will come in California, as he makes his first attempt at running CA Speedweek.
“I’m so excited to run CA Speedweek this year,” he said. “It’s an event that I’ve had marked on my to-do list for a long time.”
But, Hill’s main focus is this Saturday’s season opening race at Aztec Speedway, a three-eighths mile high banked clay oval that Hill has only run in a Micro.
“I’m not too sure what to expect,” Hill said. “What I do know though is that it is a great facility with some really cool fans, so I couldn’t think of a better place to open up the 2017 season. I’m very excited to finally get back behind the wheel.”
