Crockett, Sweatman, Tole and Martinez Feature Winners!

Crockett, Sweatman, Tole and Martinez Feature Winners!

A great field of cars, across four classes were on tap at Grays Harbor Raceway on Saturday night. The Summer Thunder Sprint Series made their first appearance of 2017, along with the PHRA Dwarf Cars. Also on hand were the Shipwreck Beads Modifieds and Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks.

Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks:

Elma's Ryen Haney led the field to the green flag for the 25 lap Cut Rate Auto Parts feature but it was Brandon Babcock of Arlington that took the early lead. Aberdeen driver Austin Kerrigan looked to make it a three car battle moving to the outside of both drivers. The first caution of the feature saw Daryl Brumfield spin in turn two on lap 1. Kerrigan jumped out to the early lead on the restart but the caution flag flew once again for a multiple car incident in turn one. A long green flag run saw Kerrigan and Hoquiam's Jason Tole battle for the lead, along with Austin Kerrigan's dad Shane Kerrigan also of Aberdeen. Last week's winner Jack Parshall of Hoquiam sat back in the fourth position waiting for any mistakes from the top three ahead. Multiple cautions plagued the Street Stocks feature and the race was cut to 20 laps. On a last attempt restart contact between Austin Kerrigan and Montesano driver Scott Fritts saw Kerrigan make hard contact with the backstretch wall bringing out the red flag. Kerrigan did walk away from the incident. The checkered flag was thrown with Tole picking up his first win of 2017. Parshall, Fritts, Haney and Rodger Perry of Belfair rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier were Fritts, Shane Kerrigan, and Mike Mann of Shelton, with Tole picking up fast time.

PHRA Dwarf Cars:

The first of four appearances by the PHRA Dwarf Cars saw 19 drivers from Washington and Oregon take to the 3/8 banked clay oval. The 25 lap feature started off with a violent flip from Leo Ward of Happy Valley, Ore in turn one on the opening lap after contact with Mollala, Ore's Henry Corbin II. Ward did walk away from the incident uninjured. The restart saw Ken Provolt of Longview lead the field to the green. As the field went down the front stretch, Provolt saw tough company as Albany's Dylan Chrisman moved into the lead. Chrisman was on the move as Longview driver Andy Lemmons was right there quickly to battle him for the lead. Ryan Martinez of Portland, Ore also joined in that battle making it a three car race for the top spot. Lemmons took the lead from Chrisman on lap 2 but saw Martinez make a pass a lap later. Lemmons and Martinez battled back and forth until Martinez took the top spot and pulled away quickly. Lemmons saw a fast moving Mollala, Ore driver Henry Corbin III at his back bumper for second. Corbin III looked fast on the low side of the raceway and took the spot from Lemmons, setting his sights on Martinez. The battle for third between Lemmons and Doug McVae of Scappose, Ore saw McVae move into third. Martinez continued to pull away and went on to pick up the PHRA Dwarf Car feature. Corbin III, McVae, Lemmons and Rich Holbert of Carson rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Martinez, McVae and Dylan Chrisman.

Shipwreck Beads Modifieds:

Tyler Walker of Elma and Cosmopolis driver Tom Sweatman set the front row of the 25 lap Shipwreck Beads Modifieds feature. Walker took the early lead from Sweatman until spinning off of turn four collecting multiple cars in the incident. Sweatman took the early lead on the restart with Zack Simpson of Aberdeen sitting in the second position. Just as the green flag flew, the caution once again appeared as Olympia driver Tyson Blood would spin in turn one collecting Scott Miller of Shelton. Sweatman looked good on the restart as the battle for second heated up between Oakville's Brian Harding, Simpson, and Lane Zerbin of Campbell River, BC. Harding moved into the second spot and looked strong on the low side of the raceway. A mid race restart saw Zerbin move into the second spot until a debris caution on lap 6 stacked the field back up. Sweatman was a man on a mission during the feature and continued to pull away from the field while Zerbin and Harding looked to chase him down for the top spot. Zerbin saw problems late in the race and ended up facing the wrong direction bringing out the caution on lap 18. The caution allowed Harding and Shelton's Kris Asche to make a move on Sweatman for the lead. Sweatman pulled away quickly on the restart, making the battle for second to be the race to watch between Harding and Asche. Sweatman would go on to pick up his second win of 2017 at Grays Harbor Raceway. Harding, Asche, Del Schnitzer, and Miller rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Aberdeen's Austin Kerrigan, and Simpson.

Summer Thunder Sprint Series:

Tacoma's Evan Margeson and Roger Crockett of Medford set the front row of the Summer Thunder Sprint Series feature. Margeson took the early lead, but the caution flag flew and set for a complete restart as Puyallup's Trey Stark spun to a stop in turn one. Margeson once again took the early lead with Crockett right on his back bumper. Crockett looked quick on the high side of the raceway and took the lead from Margeson on lap 2 coming out of turn four. Crockett quickly caught lap traffic as he continued to pull away from Margeson. Quilcene's JJ Hickle looked to make a battle for second with Margeson running the high side and taking the position on lap 9. Crockett continued to extend his lead going maneuvering his way through lap traffic. Jason Solwold of Burlington, who started in the 8th position looked to be on a mission as he moved through the field, and into the second spot looking to track down Crockett. Solwold had a late race charge as Crockett had heavy traffic in front of him. Crockett would hold on and pick up the win in a non stop 25 lap Summer Thunder Sprint Series feature. Solwold, Hickle, Robbie Price and Chase Goetz rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Chance Crum, Reece Goetz, and Chris Schmelze. Fast time went to Austen Wheatley.

Racing will resume next Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway with the return of the Wingless Sprint Series. Also on hand will be the Northwest Focus Midgets Series, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds and Outlaw Tuners. Gates will open at 5:30PM with racing beginning at 7PM.
