Horstman and Hilliker Soar to Victory in Final Night at Tri-City Motor Speedway
09/01/2017 (Auburn, MI) The final night of racing at Auburn’s Tri-City Motor Speedway was dubbed as the Racing Extravaganza with the third visit from the Great lakes Super Sprint Series as well as the Midland Steel Outlaw Late Models. A packed house also got to see the IMCA Modifieds, Pro Stocks, Street Stocks, and Mini Wedge Drivers for their last features of the year.
Devon Dobie (#23) and #84 Kyle Poortenga would lead the Great Lakes Super Sprint field to the green flag of their 25 lap main event. On lap five, defending series champion #11r Chase Ridenour would make contact with another car bringing out the first caution of the event. This would send Ridenour to the tail. #17 Jared Horstman would get a strong restart and over take Dobie for the lead. The pass would be short-lived as Dobie would muscle his way by to retake the lead. However, lapped traffic would work in favor for Horstman as he would make the winning pass on the high side and picked up his third TCMS feature of 2017 and his eleventh overall for the year. Dobie would settle for second and was followed by Poortenga, Ridenour, and #46 Robert Huisken. Heats were captured by Ridenour and Dobie.
Along with the winged sprint cars, the Midland Steel Outlaw Late Models provided high speed action as nine drivers put wings and sideboards on their cars. Defending race winner #19 Derrick Hilliker and his father #21 David Hilliker would start on the front row for the 25-lap main event. David would lead until he would hit one of the infield tires and sending it out onto the racing surface. David would be sent to the tail for bringing out the caution, which handed the lead to Derrick. He would pull away on the restart until he reached the tail end of the field. This would slow down his pace allowing for #11 Ryan Lanphierd to catch him. Lanphierd would put the nose of his machine underneath Derrick but could not make the pass. Derrick would win the event for the second year in a row finishing ahead of Lanphierd, David Hilliker, #03 JC Witherspoon, and #04 Wade Witherspoon. Lanphierd and Derrick Hilliker would take the heat race wins.
Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modifieds, although not racing for track points, had their final chance to rack up some additional state, regional, and national points on Friday night. 2016 Champion #20w AJ Ward would take the lead away from early leader #42 Craig Vance in the 20-lap main event. Ward tried to run away with the lead, but #7d Myron DeYoung would track him down and make a pass via the bottom groove within five laps remaining to pick up the checkered flag. Ward, #98 Austin Wonch, 2017 Champion #19jr Kody Johnson, and #97 Nick Stormzand completed the top five. Ward and DeYoung were also winners of their respective heats.
The Suspension MAXX Street Stock division had twenty take the green flag for their final main event. It was only one lap before second-row starter #50 Jake Thompson would take the lead. He would lead all but one lap in the 20-lap feature as he would best champion #x5 Eric Lake, #75 Toby Strong, #72 Blake Fish, and #3 Mitch Clements. Thompson, Lake, and Fish captured heat race gold.
The Walker’s Ideal Trophies Mini Wedge division saw #15 Cole Doty sweep both the heat and feature. He led every lap of the feature finishing ahead of #3 Mason Clements, #36 Jennifer Young, and #7 Brendan Deshano.
The final feature of 2017 saw the Elgin Pro Stocks battle in their twenty lap main event. #57 TJ Gilbert has had rough luck all season long. Tonight he would start on the pole and run the table by leading every lap on his way to his first victory of 2017. He would cross the stripe in front of heat race winners #28 Jared Rizer and #27 Rob Westergard. #50 Chad Bennett and #01 Randy Radabaugh completed the top five.
