Scott Winters – Busy Weekend Ahead!

(Kole Faragher) June 8, 2011 – Last week brought Scott Winters and the Winters Motorsports 23w to the track only once, and even though it wasn’t exactly the finish they wanted, they will gladly take it. But the trip didn’t come without a few headaches along the way.

Following a family wedding on Saturday night for cousin Nick, the team loaded up on Sunday for the 90 minute trek to Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.Dak. The trip took a little longer than usual thanks to a flat tire to the rig along Interstate 90. Father Kent and the gang made repairs and made it to the track in time to be third quick among the 21 cars signed in with a time of 11.287 around the 1/3 mile bullring.

That time would put Scott in the third heat starting on the third row outside. He would have to get up on the wheel to finish in the top four in order to get his time back for the feature inversion. That was especially the case after spinning out in turn one on the second lap. “I just messed up in the same spot as last week,” Winters said. He would quickly move back into the important fourth position and battle with Cody Hansen for the third spot, but would come up just short at the checkers.

An invert draw of eight put Scott on the outside of row three for the night’s main event. Scott knew he had to get going right away as the row behind him roughly has 115 career wins at the track between Terry McCarl and Mark Dobmeier. Scott was battling for the fourth position with Jody Rosenboom on lap 11 when contact down the frontstretch put Scott into the wall and resulting with a yellow flag. He was able to keep the engine fired and would keep his position (fourth) on the ensuing restart. Still, Winters felt he should have been closer to the front at that point in the race.

“Terry was able to get by us there pretty early on and then we got to battling Chad (Meyer) and Jody for a bit,” Winters explained. “I missed a slider there for third past Jody and Dobmeier was able to get by us in the next turn. That messed up my momentum for a bit and then the incident with Jody happened. Luckily nothing broke and I was able to gather myself under the caution.”

A battle on the restart ensued with a hard-charging Gregg Bakker with the two exchanging slidejobs for a couple of laps. “That was some pretty good racing we put on there” he stated. “I hope the fans had their eyes a little further back on us as we put those sliders on each other.”

Winters was then able to run down McCarl for third and the two battled until the checkers. Winters would settle for third behind Terry after Dobmeier dropped out while running second. “It wasn’t the finish we were looking for as we want to get our first win of the year, but it also was the first time we finished this year. We will gladly take it and come back next week looking for that win,” said a modest Winters.

The weekend ahead is going to be a busy one for the 24-year old Butterfield, Minn. native. He will head down to Eagle Raceway for the annual Eagle Nationals under the sanction of the ASCS National Tour. Again, he will be driving for veteran owner Gary Swenson in his #24A. He looks forward to a better showing this weekend than the last time he was down there.

“Eagle is a track that suits my style,” stated Winters. “Its short, high banked and gets into traffic quickly. I’m just hoping it turns out better this year down there compared to last year. Tony (Bruce Jr.) does a great job with this event and I hope the fans come out and support it again this year.”

Scott and the gang plan on coming back Sunday night for another trip to Huset’s and hopefully a visit to victory lane.
