Bryan Hulbert – ELMA, Wash. (June 14, 2021) While 2020 have kept the Lucas Oil American Sprint Car Series presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network closer to the mid-west, the series is set to make its annual pilgrimage to the Pacific Northwest with the return to Grays Harbor Raceway and the Brownfield Classic kicking things off on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20.
The tribute to legendary owner and promoter Fred Brownfield, the two-day affair at the facility he built will also feature the Northwest Focus Midgets and PHRA Dwarf Cars. The first of two weekends in Washington, the series will head to Skagit Speedway for the $15,000 to win Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup presented by the Skagit Casino Resort on June 24, 25, and 26.
Focusing on Grays Harbor Raceway, the series has graced the three-eighths-mile oval 18 times since 2009. Roger Crockett won the inaugural event. Last, in action in 2019, Devon Borden picked up his first career victory with the National Tour during the Brownfield Classic prelim. Oklahoma’s Matt Covington would capture the championship A-Feature.
Going into the weekend, the battle for the championship is currently led by JJ Hickle. Retaking the lead after Memorial Day Weekend’s event at Lake Ozark Speedway, the advantage is slim at best, with only 82 markers separating the top five.
Taking the lead from Blake Hahn, the Oklahoma native sits only 17 points back, with Matt Covington 22 points removed from the lead. Scott Bogucki, at 73 points back, is followed by Dylan Westbrook. Not out of the mix but with ground to make up is former Grays Harbor Raceway Champion Seth Bergman, who is 137 points back in sixth. Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Colby Thornhill is seventh, with Ryan Bickett, Alex Hill, and Travis Reber completing the top ten.
Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20 open at 4:00 P.M. with racing at 6:00 P.M. (PDT). Admission per day is $28, Senior, Junior and Military is $22, and Youth (2-10) is $5. Grays Harbor Raceway is located at 30 Elma McCleary Road in Elma, Wash. The track is part of the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds.
