Kapuscinski Captures Second SBS Checkers of Season

OSWEGO, NY (June 21, 2021) - Dan Kapuscinski, driving the Flack Racing No. 23, charged from his eighth starting spot to get by race leader Joshua Sokolic at the halfway point before holding off the young gun in the remaining 13 laps for a rain shortened checkered flag.

It was the second feature win for points leader Kapuscinski, who earned his first career SBS victory on Opening Night last month.

Settling for second was Sokolic, who earned his fifth runner-up and tenth top five finish as he continues to knock on the door for his first feature win.

Polesitter Robbie Bruce picked up his first career podium in the division while Bryan Haynes and Cameron Rowe rounded out the top five.

Bruce and Tony Pisa lead the main event to green with Pisa taking over the top spot from the outside lane.

Fourth starting Sokolic quickly followed Pisa around Bruce to move up into second and then began to pressure Pisa for the lead.

Pisa slipped up the track on lap 2 and gave Sokolic an opening down low into turn three to take over the lead.

Bruce then began to go to work on Pisa with rookie of the year contenders Griffin Miller and Noah Ratcliff battling just behind, although it wasn’t long before they were being pressured by Kapuscinski and Andrew Schartner.

Kapuscinski and Schartner both went to the outside of Ratcliff on lap 3, and then to the inside of Miller on lap 4 to grab fourth and fifth. Ratcliff also was able to fill the hole under Miller to move up into sixth.

Bruce was the next car in line to be passed by Kapuscinski, who made the move for the third position on lap 6.

Caution lights came on in the following circuit for Schartner and AJ Bernys, who both had to retire for the evening due to mechanical problems.

On the restart, Sokolic elected to use the outside lane to beat Pisa back to the point and he did so, with Pisa, Kapuscinski, and Bruce going three wide for second behind him.

Kapuscinski was able to take over second going into turn three while Ratcliff made a nifty move to go from fifth to third underneath Pisa and Bruce.

The front three cars quickly opened up a big lead over the rest of the field, with Danny K doing his best to reel in the No. 26 of Sokolic.

As Pisa was trying to hold onto sixth at the halfway point, he lost the handle on the No. 89 going into turn three, ending his night in the fence.

For the restart with 15 laps to go, Sokolic again tried the outside lane, but this time the veteran Kapuscinski proved too strong down low.

Kapuscinski took the lead right away and was able to open up a bit of an advantage over Sokolic.

Meanwhile, Miller was on the charge using the outside part of the Speedway to sneak back by Ratcliff on the restart.

The two rookie of the year leaders put on a tremendous battle for over a dozen laps before unfortunately getting together in turns one and two with only two laps remaining.

By this point, Sokolic had reeled Kapuscinski back in and began to really apply the pressure for the lead in the closing laps, but it didn’t matter.

When the yellow flag came out for Miller and Ratcliff together with 2 laps to go, the skies opened up in a big way and the race was called complete with Kapuscinski earning the hard fought win over Sokolic.

Sokolic settled for yet another second, and with Miller and Ratcliff out of it, this moved Bruce up to third, Bryan Haynes to fourth, and Cameron Rowe to fifth.

Brad Haynes finished sixth, Greg O’Connor seventh, Dennis Rupert eighth, Joey DeStevens ninth, and Mark Denny Jr. tenth.

Oswego Speedway has the week off this Saturday, June 26, but will return to action with the Independence Weekend Spectacular on Saturday, July 3 featuring the Jim Shampine and Tony White Memorials for the Novelis Supermodifieds and Pathfinder Bank SBS plus double features for the J&S Paving 350 Supermodifieds.
