Herr Overcomes Penalty to Win Firecracker 40 at BAPS

YORK HAVEN, PA - Frankie Herr tightened up the belts and was ready to get after it in the Firecracker 40 Saturday night at BAPS Motor Speedway.

To say that Herr had a little extra motivation is an understatement. He was scheduled to start on the outside of the front row of the main event, but he was fuming after being penalized a row for jumping the initial start.

Obviously, Herr disagreed with the call. But like a true veteran, it only added to his performance over the race distance.

The Carlisle, Pa., driver wasted little time showing he had the best car. He stalked track kingpin Kenny Edkin early before taking the lead and surviving a late charge to capture the BAPS Super Sportsman Firecracker 40.

“I’ve got to thank my race team a whole bunch,” Herr said. “They never give up, and that’s what it takes in this sport ... dedication and 110 percent, not 100 percent. My people do that.

“Bill [Devine] is the same way. He supplies me with whatever it takes, and the Bellman engine was running really well tonight. I’ve got to thank everybody on this team.”

Continued Herr, “I guess I’ve got to dedicate this win to the officials, because when they put me back a row when Kenny about stuffed me in the frontstretch wall ... He was past me, and I jumped. I have to give this one to them.”

Officials called back the initial start but at the same time, Allan Hallman got into the Turn 2 wall. Edkin took the lead on the second attempt, with Herr falling back to fifth after restarting in the fourth position.

Herr carved his way to the front in a hurry. After a Lap 2 caution for Steve Fannasy, the Sportsman legend surged past Tyler Wolford, Tony Jackson, and Scott Dellinger by the sixth circuit and was all over Edkin for the lead.

It didn’t take long for Herr to make his move. He blasted around the top of Turns 3 and 4 and had the lead coming off the fourth corner on Lap 8.

The leaders got into lapped traffic in a hurry, which allowed Edkin to stay close. Herr was moving all over the track to maintain his advantage, using the middle of the speedway and then the bottom late in the race.

Herr needed every bit of his speed under the hood. Edkin was within striking distance with five laps to go, but he jumped the cushion a bit in Turns 1 and 2 two laps from the finish and had to watch Herr take the victory.

At the stripe, it was Herr by .786 seconds over Edkin. Tony Jackson settled for third, with Dellinger, and Wolford completing the top five.

“Hats off to Donnie for twisting the wrenches for me,” Herr said. “That car was awesome pretty much anywhere. Donnie said to me, ‘Running the bottom there at the end, he was catching you.’ Man, my arms were getting tired. At 58 years old, I was wearing out and didn’t want to get over the curb.

“In order for [Kenny] to drive by me, he was going to have to do something spectacular, because he had to do something to get by the OZ [Devin Beidel], who was running the curb. I wasn’t too worried.

“I just wanted to hit my marks. I found a sweet spot down here in three and four. I tried to run the curb early, but the car was a tick too tight, and I had to keep the right rear out of the soft stuff. When I found that sweet spot in three and four, I was like, ‘Ah, they’re in trouble.’”

Scott Dellinger set fast time for the night with a lap of 17.896. Heats went to Troy Rhome, Herr, and Chase Gutshall. Kenny Edkin won the Dash, with Matt Ondek earning the Mac Tools Hard Charger bonus in the A-Main with a charge from 21st to ninth.

In the Creekside Auto Sales Late Model main event, Jed Latshaw topped the 24-car field to record his second win of the season in the 20-Lap event.

Latshaw started fourth on the grid and took second on Lap 2. One lap later, he blew by Joey Hoffer to take the lead. The Dover, Pa., ace survived multiple caution periods the rest of the way to take the win by 1.196 seconds at the finish.

Randy Stoudt and Chuck Shutz finished second and third. It was a big finish for Shutz, who is fourth in points and gained on Chase Billet, Shaun Miller, and Troy Miller in the standings. The top three in points didn’t finish.

Devin Frey was Hard Charger in the main event when he advanced from 16th to fourth. Ben Whitaker completed the top five.

Sammy Rial started on the pole and led every lap of the 20-Lap Superior Homes Extreme Stock event. He earned $500 for the victory after spinning the Gambler’s wheel, which determines if it’s $500 to win or $50 to start the main event.

This one wasn’t easy, as Rial, of Etters, Pa., had to hold off Hunter Fulton and survive six caution periods for his first win of the season in the division.

Fulton settled for second, with Austin Hogue, Mike Goodwin, and Tim Berkheimer completing the top five. Jordan Fulton stormed from 22nd to eighth to win Hard Charger honors.
