Kaeding 7th at Trophy Cup

PETERSEN MEDIA- Bud Kaeding ended his 2011 winged sprint car season by finishing 7th in Trophy Cup points.

Much of the excitement from this big event is the ‘two for one’ the fans get. During the feature event, not only are people paying attention to who is leading the race, but they are also trying to calculate points, as this event awards final point stadings, and not just the race finish.

69 cars kicked off the Trophy Cup on Friday, and Bud Kaeding timed his Kaeding Performance/SCI/Maxim in with the 20th fastest lap during qualifications.

Kaeding then proceeded to win his heat, and transfer directly to the feature event.

After heat races, Kaeding sat 11th in points, and with the feature inverting the top-12 in points, Kaeding sat on the outside of the front row.

Getting a great start, Kaeding held a commanding leading despite a few yellows during the first 20-laps.

As the track began taking rubber on the bottom of the speedway, second running Stevie Smith was able to poke his nose under Kaeding, and hit the rubber first and race his way into the lead, with Kaeding in tow.

Kaeding made several attempts to get back around Smith, but ended the night in second, but more importantly sat 5th in points after the first night.

Saturday night, the Campbell, CA native charged from eighth to fourth in his heat, a finish which moved Kaeding into third in the points heading into the feature, lining him up 22nd in the fully inverted 50-lap finale.

With the feature getting underway, the back half of the field never got going like typically seen in the Trophy Cup, and the top point earners battled around for the 18th spot.

As Bud battled in the 19th spot on the 19th lap, he was involved in a wreck, cutting his right rear tire, and forcing him to the work area for a tire change.

Kaeding would return to the race, but on the 27th lap, he would lose the handle and go to the back once again.

During the final 23-laps Kaeding would fight back up through the field, and finish the race in the 11th position, and 7th in the final standings.

“This car was awesome all weekend,” said Kaeding. “Friday night we had a tough car, I just didn’t get down to the bottom in time, and got beat. We had a good shot at winning this whole deal, just had a bit of bad luck in the feature and ended up 7th overall.”

Bud Kaeding would like to thank Kaeding Performance, Sprint Car Innovations, Alviso Rock, BZE, Factory Kahne Shocks, Racing Optics, K&N Filters, Yak Graphics, ButerBuilt, and Brown and Miller for their continued support in 2011.

ON TAP: Bud will now shed the wing and head to Paris, CA for the Oval Nationals on November 3-5.
