Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 22, 2021) – Gunner Ramey’s third appearance at the Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial hosted by Lucas Oil Speedway was a performance the Terry Doogs Racing team can build on.

A lack of track position hurt Ramey during Thursday’s opening night of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event as he finished where he started – eighth – in his heat race before advancing from 10th to seventh in a qualifier. Ramey missed a transfer into the A Main by two positions after maneuvering from eighth to fourth place in a B Main.

“We started really deep in the heat race and struggled with getting track position on Thursday,” he said. “By the end of the B Feature we had a really good car and with one more lap I think we could have transferred to the A Feature.”

Friday night started better as Ramey picked up two positions to post a fourth-place finish in a heat race before he garnered a runner-up result in a qualifier. That locked him directly into the main event and he closed the night with a 16th-place showing.

“Friday was a really fast, unbelievably slick and tough track all night,” he said. “We struggled a little bit in the feature, but overall I think we made some positive gains to set us up well going into Saturday.”

Ramey placed fifth in his Last Chance Qualifier to kick off the finale on Saturday. He then ended fourth in a B Main, which was two positions away from a transfer. However, he was awarded a provisional as the ASCS Warrior Region points leader to start the A Main 25th.

Ramey and the team originally thought they might start and park since he would only be awarded B Main points for using the provisional. However, the 40-lap feature saw a number of yellow flags fly early to keep the field bunched up, allowing Ramey to pick off a few positions on restarts.

Later, an open red gave the team an opportunity to make some adjustments on the car, a pivotal moment in the race for the No. 21 team.

“We really started to pass some cars after the red flag,” he said. “The car just came to life with the adjustments we made and I was having fun out there passing on a real racy track.”

Ramey made his way to 15th, an improvement of 10 positions from where he started. It marked the fourth-most positions gained by any driver.

“It felt great to have a strong final night there with a fast car,” he said. “We had a lot of people come up to watch and it was great to give them a good show.”

Up next will be Ramey’s debut at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, this Saturday night with the Sprint Invaders.

“I’ve never been there before so it’ll be cool to go to a new track for us,” he said. “I think we’ll have good speed there and I think we can get a top five out of it.”
