Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 26, 2021) – A career-best result at I-30 Speedway highlighted the 34th annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires for Gunner Ramey last weekend.

The Terry Doogs Racing driver recorded an eighth-place result during Friday’s opening round before he capped the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour event with a sixth-place showing in a B Main on Saturday.

“It was a little frustrating Saturday, but I felt we were fast every time we hit the track,” he said. “We showed that on Friday night.”

Ramey was on point from the start of the event on Friday as he set quick time during his group’s qualifying session. He then gained a position to finish third in a heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw. Ramey pulled the No. 3 to line up on the inside of the second row in the A Main.

“I just made a few mistakes and that made me fall back a few spots,” he said. “There were multiple starts at the beginning. One that didn’t go was one I needed to go. Once we got going it got to be where everyone was running the bottom. I felt better on the top and I was a little too tight to run the bottom as I needed. I pulled a few big wheelies and every time I did that it seemed we got passed. We were good for the most part. I just needed to not make the mistakes I did and be a little more careful on a track like that. Then I tapped the wall with a few laps to go and it broke the birdcage. I was just hanging on at that point.”

Ramey’s eighth-place result was his 13th top 10 of the season and second with the ASCS National Tour. It was also his first-ever top 10 at I-30 Speedway.

“I think there were a lot of positives,” he said. “For the limited laps there I felt we were really good coming out of the gate. It was really stiff competition with 60 or 70 cars and the ASCS National Tour. It was our first Short Track Nationals and my second time being there. It’s not easy to run in the top 10 with the ASCS National Tour so to do that was good.”

Saturday started on a frustrating note for Ramey, who drew toward the back of a heat race. He gained one position to end seventh, which relegated him to a B Main. Ramey battled for a top five throughout the race before ending sixth, missing a transfer into the feature by only three positions.

“I felt we had the same speed on Saturday, but with how everything worked out it didn’t quite go the way we needed it to,” he said. “I drew a pretty big number for our heat race and there was still grease or slop on the track. It’s hard to do much and that didn’t line us up very well for the rest of the night.

“The track had gotten a little better for our B Main, but everyone was fast. The track was heavy and everyone could be on the gas pretty hard. If it would have slicked off a little bit by then I think that would have been better for us. The car was pretty good, but we weren’t way better than everyone else to make a lot of passes in a situation like that.”
